What’s In This Post

I have a theory about hippie style.

The best hippie wardrobes aren’t really built around trends.

They’re built around pieces you love enough to keep wearing year after year.

Maybe that’s why so many of the things being called trendy again—flare jeans, crochet, fringe, embroidered blouses, vests, turquoise jewelry—don’t feel particularly new to some of us.

We’ve seen this movie before.

And some of us never stopped wearing them.

At 68, I’m certainly not interested in rebuilding my closet every time somebody declares that something is “in” or “out.”

I want clothes that are comfortable.

I want color.

I want movement.

I want pieces I can mix together without standing in front of my closet for 45 minutes wondering what the hell I’m supposed to wear.

And most importantly, I want to look like me.

So if you’re a hippie at heart—or maybe you’re just beginning to discover that you love this relaxed, free-spirited style—these are the fall wardrobe staples I’d start with.

1. A Great Pair of Flare or Bootcut Jeans

Let’s start with the obvious one.

Flare jeans.

They’re everywhere again.

But if you wore them the first time around, you already know why they work so well with hippie style.

There’s something about that shape that instantly gives an outfit a little ’70s personality.

You don’t need a giant bell bottom.

A subtle flare or bootcut works beautifully too.

Pair them with:

  • A flowy blouse
  • A graphic tee
  • A cardigan
  • An embroidered top
  • A vest
  • A denim jacket

Then add boots, sneakers or whatever shoes you’re actually comfortable wearing.

That’s an entire fall wardrobe built around one pair of jeans.

🛍️ Hippie Fall Staple: Look for comfortable high-waisted flare jeans with stretch — enough give to actually live in. Pair them with boho blouses, graphic tees and fall layers already in your closet.

2. A Flowy Peasant or Embroidered Blouse

This might be one of the most useful pieces in a hippie wardrobe.

Give me a blouse with embroidery, a relaxed sleeve, an interesting print or a little movement and I’m happy.

Wear it with jeans.

Wear it with wide-leg pants.

Wear it under a vest.

Throw a denim jacket over it.

And don’t be afraid of color.

Rust, turquoise, mustard, olive, burgundy, deep blue and warm floral prints are gorgeous for fall.

You don’t need to disappear into beige just because the leaves are changing. If you need permission, I wrote a whole post about dressing loud after 60.

🛍️ Shop the look: Embroidered peasant blouses in fall colors.

3. Wide-Leg and Flowy Pants

Comfort matters to me more now than it ever did.

But comfortable doesn’t have to mean giving up on style — that’s the whole idea behind flowy without frumpy.

That’s why wide-leg pants have become such a big part of my wardrobe.

They move.

They breathe.

They don’t require me to suck anything in.

And depending on the fabric and print, they can look casual, artistic, bohemian or even dressed up.

For fall, I love them in deeper colors and patterns—rust, olive, chocolate, burgundy, black, paisley and earthy prints.

Pair them with a simple tee or blouse and let the pants be the personality.

Gigi’s Tip: Wide-leg pants in a heavier fabric hang better. Thin, clingy ones just look like pajamas, and I say that with love.

4. A Denim Jacket

If I had to choose one jacket for a hippie wardrobe, denim would be pretty hard to beat.

It’s timeless.

It’s casual.

And it works with almost everything else on this list. I got into all of it in how to wear jeans and still feel free-spirited after 60.

Wear it over a maxi dress.

Throw it over a peasant blouse.

Pair it with flowy pants.

Wear it with a graphic tee.

And don’t worry about whether women over 60 are “supposed” to wear denim jackets.

We are.

Because we want to.

That’s enough reason for me.

5. A Long Cardigan or Duster

Fall means layers, and this is where things start getting fun.

A long cardigan or duster can take jeans and a plain tee and suddenly make the whole outfit interesting.

Look for texture.

Interesting knits.

Fringe.

Patterns.

Earth tones.

Or go completely in the opposite direction and find one in a color that makes you happy every time you put it on.

The nice thing about a longer layer is that it creates movement without feeling stiff or overly structured.

That’s exactly what I want from hippie style.

6. A Boho Vest

I’m very happy to see vests showing up everywhere again.

Crochet.

Denim.

Suede-look.

Embroidered.

Fringed.

Patchwork.

A vest is one of the easiest ways to give basic clothes a hippie twist — right up there with the boho accessories that turn a basic outfit into your outfit.

Take a cream blouse and jeans.

Nice outfit.

Add a fringed vest?

Now we’ve got something.

And that’s exactly how I like trends at this age.

I don’t want a trend that requires buying six other things to make it work.

Give me one interesting piece that works with what I already own.

🛍️ Easy Hippie Layer: A crochet, embroidered or fringe vest can turn jeans and a simple blouse into a completely different outfit without rebuilding your wardrobe.

7. A Fall Maxi Dress

Please don’t put all your dresses away because summer ended.

A maxi dress is one of the easiest pieces to carry into fall.

Especially if you’re living somewhere like Arizona where “fall” sometimes seems to be more of a suggestion than an actual season. It’s the whole reason I lean into desert girl style with an Arizona soul.

Take your maxi dress and add:

  • A denim jacket
  • A cardigan
  • A vest
  • Boots
  • A scarf
  • Different jewelry

Suddenly it doesn’t feel like a summer dress anymore.

I especially love darker florals, paisley prints and earthy colors for this time of year.

8. A Graphic Tee That Says Something About You

I love a good graphic tee.

Band tee.

Vintage-inspired tee.

Something funny.

Something with a little attitude.

Something that actually says something about the woman wearing it.

Pair one with flare jeans and a cardigan and you’ve got an easy casual fall outfit.

And if somebody thinks you’re too old for a graphic tee?

They don’t have to wear one.

Problem solved.

9. Comfortable Ankle Boots

Here’s where I have changed with age.

I still want cute shoes.

I just don’t want cute shoes badly enough to be miserable anymore.

Those days are over.

Give me ankle boots with a manageable heel, enough room for my feet and something I can actually walk in.

Brown, cognac, black and taupe work with practically everything. I put together a whole batch of ankle boot outfit ideas for fall if you want to see them styled.

If you find a pair with a little fringe, embroidery or western detail?

Even better.

But comfort wins.

Every damn time.

Gigi’s Tip: Order the wide width if you’re between sizes. I’d rather return a boot than limp through October.

10. A Crossbody Bag

A hippie wardrobe needs a bag you can actually use.

Crossbody bags work especially well because they’re practical and still leave room for personality.

Leather.

Suede-look.

Fringe.

Embroidery.

Patchwork.

Turquoise details.

Vintage-inspired hardware.

I love accessories that look like they’ve got a story.

And I really love having my hands free.

11. Turquoise and Statement Jewelry

Now we’re getting to my favorite part.

Jewelry.

You can give me the simplest outfit in the world—jeans and a white blouse—and I can make it feel like mine with jewelry. These are the boho jewelry pieces I wear on repeat.

Turquoise is obviously one of my favorites.

But think beyond just one necklace.

Layer necklaces.

Stack bracelets.

Wear the big earrings.

Mix metals if you want.

Wear jewelry with meaning.

Some of my favorite pieces aren’t important because they perfectly coordinate with an outfit.

They’re important because of who or what they remind me of. That’s a big part of why I finally started wearing the jewelry I always wanted.

That’s style too.

Maybe the best kind.

12. One Piece With Fringe

Do you need fringe?

Technically, no.

Do I think every hippie wardrobe is happier with a little fringe?

Absolutely.

A bag.

A vest.

A jacket.

Boots.

Even a scarf.

You don’t need to look like you’re headed to Woodstock.

One fringed piece is enough to give an otherwise simple outfit some movement and personality.

Although if you want more than one, I’m certainly not going to call the fashion police.

13. A Kimono in Fall Colors

Kimonos don’t disappear when summer ends.

They just get moodier.

Instead of bright tropical prints, look for rust, teal, olive, burgundy, mustard and paisley, darker florals and vintage-inspired patterns.

They’re perfect for transitional fall weather because you get the feeling of a layer without necessarily getting the warmth of a heavy sweater. If you’re not sure where to start, here’s how to style a kimono after 60.

That’s especially useful for those of us living where October can still feel suspiciously like July.

14. A Good Basic Tee or Tank

This isn’t exciting.

But it’s important.

Every wardrobe needs the boring pieces that let the interesting pieces shine.

A black tee.

A cream tee.

A white tank.

Maybe chocolate or olive.

Put the basic underneath your kimono, cardigan, vest or jacket.

Then add your jewelry.

The basics aren’t supposed to be the star.

They’re there so the star has somewhere to stand.

Three Fall Outfits From One Pair of Jeans

Here’s the part I wish somebody had shown me instead of just handing me a list. It’s the same thinking behind the boho layering tricks I wish I knew sooner.

Outfit One — The Tuesday

Flare jeans. Black basic tee. Long duster cardigan. Ankle boots. Layered turquoise necklaces.

That’s it. That’s the whole outfit.

It takes four minutes and it works for the grocery store, a doctor’s appointment, or coffee with somebody you actually like.

Outfit Two — The One With a Little Attitude

Same jeans. Graphic tee. Fringe vest over the top. Boots. Big earrings. Crossbody bag.

Nothing new got purchased.

The vest did all the work.

Outfit Three — The “Somebody’s Taking a Picture”

Same jeans again. Cream embroidered peasant blouse. Denim jacket. Boots. Stacked bracelets. Scarf if it’s actually cold, which in Arizona means late January.

Three completely different outfits.

One pair of jeans.

That’s what I mean when I say a wardrobe should work together instead of just sitting there in pieces.

You Don’t Need All 14

Please don’t read this and think I’m telling you to go buy fourteen things.

I’m not.

Actually, I’d rather you start by opening your closet.

You may already have half of this.

  • A good pair of jeans.
  • A white or cream blouse.
  • A black tee.
  • A denim jacket.

Maybe there’s a maxi dress you wore all summer.

Maybe you already own boots.

Maybe you’ve got turquoise jewelry sitting in a drawer.

That’s your starting point.

Then look at what’s missing.

Maybe this is the year you add the flare jeans.

Or the long cardigan.

Or that fabulous fringed bag you’ve been looking at.

A wardrobe should be collected.

Not panic-purchased.

What I’d Buy First If I Were Starting From Zero

If somebody handed me an empty closet and told me to build a hippie fall wardrobe, I’d buy in this order:

  1. The jeans. Everything else hangs off them.
  2. The boots. Comfortable ones. This is where I’d spend the most and regret it the least.
  3. One interesting layer — the vest or the duster. Whichever one made me happier to look at.
  4. The jewelry. Cheapest way to make everything else look intentional.

Notice what’s not on that list.

Nothing trendy. Nothing that only works with one other thing. Nothing I’d have to talk myself into.

Four pieces. Then stop and wear them for a while before you buy anything else. If you want to see what’s actually worth restocking, I keep a running list of boho closet staples that actually sell out — and my favorite boho Amazon fashion finds after 60.

Questions I Get Asked About Hippie Style Over 60

Is boho style too young for women over 60?

No. And I’d gently ask who exactly decided that. Boho is about movement, color and comfort — three things that get more appealing with age, not less.

How do I wear flare jeans without looking like a costume?

Keep the rest simple. One ’70s-leaning piece per outfit is plenty. Flare jeans with a plain tee reads as style. Flare jeans plus fringe vest plus headband plus round sunglasses reads as Halloween.

What if I’m short?

Higher-rise jeans and a heel inside the boot. That’s the whole trick. Let the hem nearly touch the floor.

Does any of this work in a hot climate?

That’s my entire life. Kimonos instead of sweaters, maxi dresses year-round, and boots the second it drops below 85. Fall in Arizona is a state of mind.

Do I have to buy new things?

Absolutely not. Open your closet first. Most women I know already own six of these fourteen and don’t realize they’re two pieces away from a whole look.

Hippie Style After 60 Isn’t About Dressing Like You’re Still 25

I think this is where people sometimes misunderstand hippie style on older women.

I’m not trying to recreate exactly what I wore decades ago.

And I’m definitely not trying to look younger. I’ve said it before — I’m trying to look like myself.

I’m 68.

I earned 68.

What I want is to carry the parts of myself I’ve always loved into the woman I am now.

The color.

The jewelry.

The denim.

The flowy clothes.

The slightly rebellious streak.

The part of me that still thinks fringe makes almost everything better.

That’s not dressing young.

That’s having a personal style.

And personal style doesn’t come with an expiration date.

So wear the flare jeans.

Put on the turquoise.

Throw the kimono over the basic tee.

Buy the damn fringe bag if it makes you smile.

Your closet doesn’t need to look like anybody else’s idea of what a woman over 60 should wear.

It just needs to look like you live there.

And if there’s still a hippie living in there too?

Even better.

Now tell me in the comments — which one of the fourteen are you missing? And which one are you never giving up?

Don’t let your age determine the size of your dreams—or the size of your personality.
