Maybe she never really left.
That girl who loved the flowing clothes. The jewelry that made a little noise when she walked. The colors, the music, the bare feet, the big earrings, the attitude.
Maybe you just got busy.
You raised kids. Built a career. Paid bills. Took care of people. Became somebody’s wife, mother, grandmother, employee, caregiver—the woman everybody could count on.
And somewhere along the way, that free-spirited girl inside you got very, very quiet.
Well, baby, maybe it’s time to let her out.
I’m 68, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.
You Don’t Have to Dress Your Age
Who decided what 60, 65, or 68 is supposed to look like anyway?
You don’t suddenly lose your love of color because Medicare starts sending you mail.
You don’t have to trade your personality for beige.
And you certainly don’t have to walk into a store and ask yourself, Is this appropriate for my age?
Maybe the better question is:
Does this feel like me?
If the answer is yes, wear it.
That might mean a flowing kimono over your jeans. It might mean a soft maxi dress, a pair of boho boots, or a stack of bracelets that announces your arrival before you do.

Look for something colorful, lightweight, and easy to throw over jeans, a tank, or a simple dress.
Start With One Thing That Makes You Feel Like Her Again
You don’t need to throw away everything in your closet and reinvent yourself overnight.
Start small.
Put on the turquoise earrings.
Wear the funky necklace.
Buy the embroidered jeans.
Paint your nails the color somebody once told you was “too young.”
That little choice matters because you’re reminding yourself that you’re still in there.
For me, embracing my boho style hasn’t really been about clothes.
It’s been about giving myself permission.

Think turquoise, layered necklaces, butterflies, natural stones, or whatever makes you smile when you put it on.
Comfort Doesn’t Mean You’ve Given Up
Here’s one thing you learn after 60: if something hurts, pinches, scratches, squeezes, or requires you to hold your breath all afternoon, you’re probably not wearing it.
But comfortable doesn’t have to mean invisible.
You can wear the flowy blouse.
You can choose wide-leg pants.
You can put on the maxi dress that moves when you walk.
You can wear comfortable shoes and still look like the fabulous modern hippie you’ve decided to become.
At this age, you don’t have to suffer for fashion.
You get to make fashion work for you.

Because cute shoes don’t have to make you regret leaving the house.
Let Her Out in More Than Your Closet
Here’s where things get interesting.
Your hippie girl isn’t really about clothes at all.
She’s the part of you that still wants to try things.
She’s curious.
She’s creative.
She’s the woman who says, Why not?
Maybe she wants to start painting.
Maybe she wants to grow vegetables on the patio.
Maybe she wants to start a YouTube channel.
Maybe she wants to travel.
Maybe she wants pink hair.
Maybe she wants to sit outside with a glass of wine, listen to music, and stop worrying about whether anybody thinks she’s acting her age.
Let her.
Because the real freedom of getting older isn’t disappearing.
It’s realizing you don’t need nearly as much permission as you once thought you did.
Stop Saving the Good Stuff
Don’t save the dress.
Don’t save the jewelry.
Don’t save the perfume.
Don’t save the good dishes.
And please don’t save the version of yourself you really want to become for “someday.”
Someday has had plenty of chances.
Wear it now.
Try it now.
Learn it now.
Start it now.
One Little Thing Just Because You Love It

Maybe it’s a colorful handbag, embroidered belt, funky sunglasses, scarf, or something completely unnecessary that simply makes you happy.
Because whether you’re 60, 68, or 78, you’re still becoming somebody.
Your Hippie Girl Has Been Waiting
I’m discovering mine again at 68.
She looks a little different than she did decades ago.
She’s got more wrinkles.
She’s got more stories.
Her knees occasionally have opinions.
And she’s learned a few things the younger version of herself didn’t know yet.
But she’s still here.
And I have a feeling yours is too.
So pull out the earrings.
Throw on the kimono.
Turn up the music.
And let that woman out.
She’s waited long enough.
Don’t let your age determine the size of your dreams.
