Dressing for Me, Not My Age: Amazon Fashion Finds I Love

Somewhere along the way, women were handed a very strange set of fashion rules.

After a certain age, don’t wear this.

Cover that.

Avoid bright colors.

Don’t wear your hair that way.

Don’t show too much.

Don’t try too hard.

But also don’t “let yourself go.”

Good grief.

I’m 68.

I don’t have time for all that.

These days, I’m trying to follow one fashion rule:

I dress for me, not my age.

That doesn’t mean I’m trying to dress like I’m 28.

I don’t want to be 28.

I earned 68.

It means I want to wear clothes that reflect the woman I am right now.

And she’s still changing.

So today I’m sharing my favorite Amazon fashion over 60 finds: the seven kinds of pieces I keep coming back to, what I look for in each one, and how I shop for them without ending up with a closet full of regret.

Grab your coffee, Girl Tribe. Let’s talk clothes.

How I Got Here: From Dress Codes to Fringe

For seven years, I was the office manager at a funeral home.

That job taught me a lot about people, and about what matters when everything else falls away.

It also came with a dress code.

Dark. Quiet. Respectful. Nothing that pulled focus.

And that was right for the work. A family walking through that door on the worst day of their lives did not need my turquoise earrings making an entrance.

But years of getting dressed to disappear does something to you.

You stop asking what you like.

You just ask what’s appropriate.

When I left in 2022, I had a closet full of clothes that belonged to a job I didn’t have anymore.

Then I fell down a Pinterest hole.

Flowy tops. Embroidery. Kimonos. Fringe. Women my age with stacked bracelets, looking like they had somewhere wonderful to be.

And something in me said: Oh. There you are.

It didn’t feel like a makeover.

It felt like remembering.

I’m not trying to look younger. I’m trying to look like myself.

That’s the whole philosophy. Everything below is just the shopping list that goes with it.

What’s in This Post

I Didn’t Suddenly Stop Loving Clothes at 60

Why would I?

I still like color.

I still like fringe.

I still like flowy tops and boho dresses and funky jewelry.

I still like putting something on and thinking:

Oh yeah. That’s me.

Maybe that’s actually one of the gifts of getting older.

I’ve had enough time to figure out what isn’t me too.

And that makes shopping a whole lot easier.

My 3 Rules for Shopping Amazon Fashion Over 60

Amazon can be a treasure chest or a junk drawer, sometimes on the same page.

Shopping Amazon fashion over 60 gets a lot easier with a few rules. Here’s how I stay on the treasure side.

1. I read the size chart, not the size

A 2X from one brand and a 2X from another are distant cousins at best.

So I ignore the letter and check the actual measurements in the listing’s size chart against a top or a pair of jeans I already own and love.

Keep a soft measuring tape handy. It’s the cheapest styling tool you’ll ever own.

2. I read the newest reviews first

Not the top ones. The newest ones.

I’m looking for three things:

  • Does it run small?
  • Does it fall apart after a wash or two?
  • Does it look like the photo?

If recent reviewers are complaining about any of those, I keep scrolling.

And a review photo from a real woman in her real kitchen is worth ten studio shots.

3. I check the fabric before I fall in love

I live in Arizona.

A top that doesn’t breathe turns into a personal sauna by ten in the morning.

So I look for cotton, rayon, linen blends and anything described as lightweight.

One more thing: I look for free returns on the listing before I order. Trying it on at home, in my own mirror, in my own lighting, is the whole point.

Find #1: The Boho Blouse

A great boho blouse is practically part of my uniform.

I love embroidery, interesting sleeves, texture and tops with a little movement.

I’ll wear one with jeans and earrings and call it an outfit.

Because it is.

What I look for in a boho blouse

  • Embroidery or a print with some personality
  • Sleeves with something going on: bell, flutter or three-quarter
  • A longer, looser cut that skims instead of clings
  • Cotton or rayon, so it breathes

How I wear it

Jeans, big earrings, done.

On a dressier day, I’ll tuck just the front and add a long necklace.

One tip: if the blouse is busy, keep the bottom half simple. Let one thing do the talking.

I’ve got more ideas in my post on pairing boho tops with wide-leg pants.

Shop the look: embroidered boho blouses · plus-size boho tunic tops · bell sleeve peasant tops

This is exactly what I mean by letting one piece do the talking. The paisley tunic has plenty going on, so I kept the pants and boots simple and added my jewelry. Easy, comfortable, and still very me.

Find #2: The Jeans I’m Not Fighting With

Remember when we thought lying on the bed to zip our jeans was normal?

What were we doing?

I want jeans that fit my body instead of expecting my body to fit the jeans.

Stretch.

Comfortable rise.

Enough room to move.

Those are features now, not compromises.

What I look for in jeans

  • A little spandex or elastane in the fabric line. That’s where the stretch lives.
  • A mid or high rise that stays put when I sit down
  • A wide, flat waistband, or a pull-on style with no button digging in
  • A straight, bootcut or wide leg that balances a flowy top

How I wear them

With everything. That’s the point of a good pair of jeans.

A darker wash dresses up. A lighter wash feels more relaxed and a little more hippie.

Of everything in Amazon fashion over 60, jeans are where the size chart and the newest reviews matter most. Amazon denim sizing is all over the map.

If jeans just aren’t your thing, I rounded up some plus-size boho pants I love too.

Find #3: The Dress Somebody Might Say I’m “Too Old” For

Whenever I hear the phrase “too old for,” my first question is:

According to whom?

If I like a printed maxi dress, I’m wearing it.

If I want something colorful, I’m wearing it.

If I want a little drama in the sleeves?

You already know the answer.

The goal isn’t to look younger.

The goal is to look like myself.

What I look for in a dress

  • A maxi or midi length that moves when I walk
  • A print I’d pick even if nobody else liked it
  • A tiered or empire shape, or a tie waist I can adjust myself
  • Pockets. Always pockets.

How I wear a boho dress

Sandals and a stack of bracelets when it’s warm.

A denim jacket and ankle boots when Arizona finally remembers it has a fall.

And if a dress feels like too big a leap, start with one you’d wear around the house. Then wear it to the grocery store. Nobody faints. I promise.

More ideas here: modern hippie outfits that still feel like you.

Find #4: The Kimono

A kimono gives me everything I want from clothes.

Movement.

Color.

Personality.

And very little effort.

Throw one over a simple outfit and suddenly you’ve got something going on.

That’s my kind of fashion math.

What I look for in a kimono

  • Lightweight fabric like chiffon or rayon, because I’m layering in the desert
  • Hip length for everyday, duster length for drama
  • An open front. No buttons, nothing to fuss with.
  • A print with at least one color I already own, so it works with what’s in my closet

How I wear a kimono

Tank top, jeans, kimono. That’s the whole formula.

It’s also my answer to every restaurant that keeps the air conditioning set to “meat locker.”

And if you’re building a wardrobe around a few pieces that all work together, a kimono earns its spot. I laid out the whole idea in my 12-piece boho capsule wardrobe.

Find #5: The Statement Necklace

There was probably a time when I worried about whether something was “too much.”

I’m less concerned about that now.

Maybe I’m too much.

Okay.

Give me the necklace.

Accessories are one of the easiest ways to experiment because you don’t have to rebuild your entire wardrobe.

Put a great necklace over a simple top and see how you feel.

What I look for in jewelry

  • Turquoise, natural stone, wood beads or layered chains
  • An adjustable length, so it lands where I want it with different necklines
  • Light enough that I forget I’m wearing it

How I wear statement jewelry

One loud piece at a time, usually.

Big necklace, quieter earrings. Big earrings, skip the necklace.

Unless I don’t feel like following that rule either.

And sometimes I layer the necklaces, wear the earrings, put on the purple glasses and call it a day. Style rules are suggestions, not commandments.

The one piece that never leaves the rotation is my dad’s fingerprint ring. I wear it every day, and everything else gets built around it.

That’s the other thing about jewelry at our age. Some of it is decoration. Some of it is who we’ve loved.

I went deeper on this in the boho accessories that turn a basic outfit into your outfit.

Find #6: Comfortable Shoes That Are Still Cute

I refuse to believe these two things are mutually exclusive.

I want cute shoes.

I also want to be able to walk tomorrow.

At this stage of life, my feet, knees and back all apparently have opinions.

So yes, I’m listening.

What I look for in shoes

  • A cushioned footbed with real arch support
  • A flat or a low block heel
  • A roomy toe box, and wide widths when I can find them
  • Adjustable straps, because feet change over the course of a day

How I wear them all year

I wear sandals most of the year because, well, Arizona.

Sandals most of the year really does mean most of the year around here. If they’re comfortable enough to live in and still have a little personality, they earn a spot in my closet.

Ankle boots for the short stretch we call winter.

And I’ve stopped saving the good shoes for a special occasion. Tuesday is an occasion. I’m upright and I’ve had coffee.

My full list is in boho shoes after 60 that still have personality.

Find #7: Something in a Color That Makes Me Happy

Not a color that’s supposedly “slimming.”

Not a color someone decided is appropriate for mature women.

A color that makes me happy when I put it on.

Turquoise.

Pink.

Rust.

A gorgeous print.

Apparently turquoise makes both of us happy. 😂

Whatever makes you stand a little taller when you look in the mirror.

Amazon fashion over 60 does not have to mean the beige section.

How to try a new color without the commitment

  • Start small and near your face: a scarf, earrings or a kimono
  • Hold it up in daylight. Do you look awake? That’s your answer.
  • Buy one piece and wear it three times before you decide

If you’ve lived in black and navy for decades, this one can feel strange at first. I know. I had the closet to prove it.

Give it a week.

I shared my favorites in the colors I’m wearing after 60.

My Body Isn’t a Problem My Clothes Need to Fix

This has probably been one of the biggest shifts for me.

For years, fashion advice for women—especially plus-size women—has been about correcting something.

Hide the stomach.

Minimize the hips.

Look taller.

Look thinner.

Look younger.

How exhausting is that?

What if getting dressed wasn’t about fixing ourselves?

What if it was just about expressing ourselves?

This body has carried me through 68 years. It has worked, grieved, started over and learned a whole new career after retirement.

It doesn’t owe anybody an apology, and it sure doesn’t need to be camouflaged.

I’m still learning that one.

But I’m getting better at it.

If you need a little backup on this, read why sexy is really just confidence and how to own the room at any age.

Quick Questions You Might Be Asking

Is Amazon fashion over 60 actually any good?

It can be, if you shop it carefully. The quality is all over the place, which is why I lean on size charts, fabric details and the newest reviews instead of the pretty photos. When it works, you get pieces with real personality that you’d never find at the mall.

Can I really wear boho style after 60?

Yes. Boho is flowy, comfortable and forgiving, which makes it one of the easiest styles to wear at any age or size. Start with one piece, like a kimono or a blouse, and build from there.

How do I find the right size when I shop for clothes on Amazon?

Skip the letter size and go straight to the measurements in the listing’s size chart. Compare them to something you already own that fits well, then read the newest reviews to see if it runs small or large.

What if I buy it and feel silly wearing it?

Wear it at home first. Then wear it somewhere low-stakes. If you still don’t feel like yourself, send it back and try something else. That’s not failing. That’s figuring out what you like.

Wear the Damn Thing

If you’ve been looking at something and thinking:

I love it, but can I still wear that at my age?

Try changing the question.

Ask:

Do I love it?

Does it fit?

Do I feel good wearing it?

If the answer is yes, you’ve got your answer.

Your birthday doesn’t get a vote.

I’m 68.

I’m still experimenting.

I’m still changing.

I’m still figuring out what I like.

And I’m definitely not finished becoming whoever I’m going to be next.

That’s true for a lot more than my closet, by the way. I wrote about it in why my dreams are getting bigger at 68, not smaller.

So I’m dressing for her.

Not for my age.

And definitely not for somebody else’s rules.
