Sexy Is Confidence: Plus-Size Dresses & Statement Style After 60

Because sexy doesn’t have an expiration date—and neither does having fun with your clothes.

There’s a word women over 60 don’t hear directed at us nearly enough.

Sexy.

Apparently, somewhere between menopause, reading glasses and getting our Medicare cards, we’re supposed to quietly hand that word over to the younger women.

Yeah.

I don’t think so.

I’m 68. I’m plus-size. My body has changed. Gravity and I have had several disagreements, and gravity appears to have won a few of them.

But sexy?

Baby, sexy was never about having a perfect body.

It was never about wearing the shortest dress in the room.

And it sure as hell wasn’t about looking 25.

Sexy is confidence.

It’s putting something on, looking in the mirror and thinking:

Ohhhh. There she is.

That’s the woman I want to dress.

And when I started looking through Unique Vintage, I realized this was exactly the conversation I wanted to have.

Because these aren’t clothes designed to help you disappear.

Thank God.

First, Let’s Redefine Sexy After 60

When I say sexy, I’m not necessarily talking about cleavage and short skirts.

Although if that’s your thing, carry on, sister.

Sexy can be a fitted dress.

Sexy can be a flowing dress.

Sexy can have sleeves.

Sexy can be pants.

Sexy can be a fabulous blouse with jeans.

Sexy can be red lipstick, big earrings and a pair of glasses.

Sexy can be walking into dinner with your husband knowing you look damn good.

What makes something sexy isn’t how much skin you’re showing.

It’s how you feel wearing it.

And that’s where style gets really interesting after 60.

We’re finally old enough to know the difference.

Vintage-Inspired Doesn’t Mean Dressing Old

This is one of the reasons Unique Vintage makes sense for me.

I love vintage-inspired style.

I love a little nod to another era.

But there’s a big difference between vintage-inspired and looking like you’re wearing a costume.

A great fit-and-flare dress.

An interesting neckline.

A bold print.

A dramatic sleeve.

A fabulous jumpsuit.

Those elements can feel nostalgic without making you look like you’re headed to a 1950s theme party.

The trick is letting one piece tell the story and keeping the rest of the outfit yours.

Stop Dressing to Hide Your Body

This is a big one for plus-size women.

How many shopping decisions have we made based on one question?

Does this make me look thinner?

Not:

Do I love it?

Does the color make me happy?

Does it feel good?

Would I actually enjoy wearing this?

Nope.

Does. It. Make. Me. Look. Thinner.

I’ve played that game too.

I’m just not interested in playing it anymore.

There is nothing wrong with wanting clothing that flatters your body.

Of course I want my clothes to fit well.

But I don’t want my entire wardrobe designed around the idea that my body needs to be disguised.

I’m not a before picture.

I’m the woman living in this body right now.

And she deserves some damn good clothes.

A Fit-and-Flare Dress Is Still One of the Greats

There are certain silhouettes that just work.

For me, a fit-and-flare dress is one of them.

Defined through the upper body, movement through the skirt, and enough personality to make an entrance.

And the best part?

You can actually move in the damn thing.

Add comfortable shoes, jewelry and maybe a cardigan or jacket depending on the weather.

You’re dressed.

You don’t need twelve layers and a complicated styling formula.

Sexy Can Have Sleeves

Can we kill this idea that sexy clothing has to reveal everything?

Because some days I want cleavage.

Some days I want sleeves.

Sometimes I want both.

A dress with a beautiful neckline and longer sleeve can be every bit as striking as something sleeveless.

Same with a fitted top paired with wide-leg pants.

Or a jumpsuit that defines your shape without showing much skin at all.

Sexy is an energy, not a dress code.

That’s especially important after 60 because I don’t want women thinking they have to dress outside their comfort zone to prove they’re still attractive.

You don’t.

Wear what makes you feel good.

And Yes, You Can Still Show Some Skin

Now let’s go the other direction.

If you love your shoulders, show them.

If you like your legs, let them out.

If you’ve got fabulous cleavage and you want to wear the neckline?

Baby.

I am not coming over to stop you.

There isn’t an age when your shoulders suddenly become inappropriate.

Your knees didn’t receive a retirement notice at 60.

And your cleavage did not expire when your AARP card arrived.

Wear what makes you comfortable.

That’s the rule.

Actually, that’s pretty much my only rule.

Try the Damn Jumpsuit

I know.

Some women just read that heading and said:

Absolutely not, Gigi.

Hear me out.

A great jumpsuit can be one of the easiest outfits in the closet.

One piece.

Jewelry.

Shoes.

Done.

Look for something with enough room to move, a waist placement that feels comfortable, and a neckline you like.

And don’t dismiss it because you think jumpsuits are for younger women.

We’re done with that.

Try it on.

If you hate it, take it off.

Clothing is not a lifetime commitment. 😂

Wear the Print

Polka dots.

Florals.

Plaid.

Retro prints.

Novelty prints.

Color.

I love clothes with personality.

And Unique Vintage isn’t exactly known for whispering.

That’s why it works so well for women who want something beyond the same black top hanging on twelve different racks.

If a bold print feels intimidating, don’t pile everything else on top of it.

Let the dress be the star.

Simple shoes.

A couple of pieces of jewelry.

Maybe a solid cardigan.

Done.

And if you’re more like me and believe jewelry deserves its own zip code?

Well…

Proceed accordingly.

Stop Saving the Good Dress

Please tell me I’m not the only woman who has bought something fabulous and then saved it.

Waiting for the right dinner.

The right vacation.

The right party.

The right event.

Then you find it hanging in the closet two years later with the tag still attached.

What exactly were we waiting for?

Wear the dress to dinner.

Wear it on your anniversary.

Wear it to brunch.

Wear it on vacation.

Wear it because BigDog said, “Where are we going?” and you said:

“I don’t know yet, but apparently I’m dressed.”

Life is the special occasion.

I’m starting to believe that more and more.

Your Body Doesn’t Have to Earn the Outfit

This might be the most important thing I can say in this entire post.

You don’t have to lose ten pounds first.

You don’t have to tone your arms.

You don’t have to wait until your stomach is flatter.

You don’t have to become some imaginary future version of yourself before you’re allowed to wear something beautiful.

Buy clothes for the woman who exists today.

She’s the one going places.

She’s the one making memories.

She’s the one standing in the photographs.

She’s the one who deserves to feel beautiful.

Sexy Doesn’t Mean Trying to Look Younger

I have absolutely no interest in dressing like I’m 25.

I already did 25.

I had a good run.

I’m interested in looking like a fabulous 68-year-old woman.

There’s a difference.

I have wrinkles.

I have scars.

I have parts that jiggle.

I have short white hair.

I wear glasses.

And none of those things cancel out sexy.

Actually, I think there’s something incredibly attractive about reaching an age where you finally know yourself.

You know what you like.

You know what you don’t like.

You know who you are.

And your tolerance for bullshit has gotten wonderfully low.

That’s sexy.

Gigi’s Unique Vintage Formula

If you’re looking at all these fabulous pieces wondering how you’d actually wear them, keep it simple.

Statement dress + comfortable shoes + jewelry + confidence.

Or:

Statement top + wide-leg pants or jeans + accessories.

Or:

Jumpsuit + earrings + shoes you can walk in.

You don’t need to recreate the entire era the piece came from.

You’re not dressing as a vintage woman.

You’re taking something vintage-inspired and making it part of your wardrobe.

That’s the difference.

Wear Something That Makes You Say “Oh Hell Yes”

That’s really what this whole thing comes down to.

I don’t care whether it’s a dress.

A jumpsuit.

Wide-leg pants.

A fabulous blouse.

Or something completely different.

I want women our age to stop asking:

Am I too old for this?

And start asking:

How do I feel in this?

Because those are two very different questions.

If you put it on and immediately start tugging, hiding and worrying about what everyone else will think?

Put it back.

But if you put it on…

look in the mirror…

stand a little taller…

maybe turn sideways…

then turn back…

and think:

Oh hell yes.

Baby.

That’s your outfit.

Sexy isn’t young.

Sexy isn’t thin.

Sexy isn’t a size printed on a tag.

Sexy is confidence.

And confidence?

That looks pretty damn good at 68.
