I didn’t need a new living room. I wanted a cozy living room for fall — and all that took was a few things that made the room we already have feel better.
There is a moment every year when I walk into our living room and think:
Okay. I’m ready for cozy.
Now, living in Arizona, the weather doesn’t necessarily cooperate with this feeling.
It can still be ridiculously warm outside while I’m inside pretending a chunky blanket is seasonally appropriate.
I don’t care.
It’s fall in my house. 😂
But this year I didn’t want to go crazy buying decorations. I didn’t want twelve bins of seasonal stuff. And I definitely wasn’t interested in spending $500 trying to make a perfectly good living room look like somebody else’s living room on Pinterest.
I gave myself a challenge instead:
Could I make our living room feel noticeably cozier for fall for under $200?
Not completely redecorate it.
Not replace furniture.
Just make it feel warmer, softer and more like the room I want to curl up in at the end of the day.
The answer?
Absolutely.
And the biggest surprise was realizing I didn’t need very much.

First, I Shopped Our House
Before I bought one thing, I looked at what we already had.
This is the part I used to skip.
I’d decide I wanted a new look and immediately start shopping.
Now?
I start opening cabinets. 😂
I already had baskets.
I already had candles.
I had books.
I had trays.
I had a few neutral pieces that could work in any season.
And I definitely had things tucked away that I’d completely forgotten about.
So my first fall decorating haul cost exactly:
$0.
That’s my favorite price.
GIGI’S $200 RULE
Don’t spend money replacing things that aren’t the problem.
Keep the furniture.
Keep the rug if you like it.
Keep the lamps.
Keep the things that already feel like you.Spend the money on the layers that change how the room feels.
1. I Started With One Good Throw
Budget: approximately $30–$40
If I could buy only one thing to make a room feel like fall, it would probably be a throw.
There’s something about tossing a textured blanket over the sofa or chair that immediately changes the room.
And no, it doesn’t have to have pumpkins embroidered all over it.
Actually, I’d rather it didn’t.
I wanted something I could use in October, December and February.
Cream.
Camel.
Rust.
Olive.
A warm neutral.
Something chunky or textured enough to add interest even when nobody is actually using it.
And in Arizona, let’s be honest.
Sometimes that blanket is mostly there for emotional support. 😂
🛒 Shop the Cozy Textured Throw: Chunky knit textured throw · Rust, olive & camel boho throws
Look for something you’ll still want on the sofa after the pumpkins are gone.
2. I Changed the Pillows — Not the Pillows
Budget: approximately $25–$35
Here’s one of the best decorating lessons I’ve learned:
Buy pillow covers.
Not seventeen new throw pillows.
Covers.
They take up almost no storage space, they’re usually much less expensive, and you can completely change the look of a sofa without having to figure out where you’re going to store six giant Christmas pillows in April.
For fall, I’d bring in two or three colors or textures.
Maybe rust.
Olive.
Mustard.
A warm brown.
Or even a print if the rest of the room is fairly quiet.
And because this is my house, there needs to be a little personality somewhere.
We’re going for cozy.
Not beige witness protection.
🛒 Shop Fall Pillow Covers: Fall pillow covers in rust, olive & mustard · Boho textured pillow covers
Texture, warm color and something that still looks like your house.
3. I Added Warm Lighting
Budget: approximately $25–$35
This one makes a bigger difference than people realize.
You can have a beautiful room and ruin the whole thing with one blazing overhead light.
No thank you.
Once evening comes, I want lamps.
Candles.
Warm little pools of light.
Maybe some subtle fairy lights.
That’s what makes a room feel cozy to me.
And you don’t need an expensive lamp to do it.
Sometimes it’s as simple as changing the bulb temperature or moving a lamp from another room.
🛒 Shop Warm Ambient Lighting: Warm white fairy lights with timer · Soft white 2700K bulbs
🛒 Shop Battery-Operated Candles: Flameless LED pillar candles with remote & timer
THE FREE COZY TRICK
Tonight, turn off the overhead light.
Turn on your lamps.
Light a candle or switch on a battery candle.
Sit down.
Same room. Completely different feeling.
4. I Brought In One Natural Texture
Budget: approximately $25–$40
This could be a basket.
A woven tray.
A wood bowl.
A little rattan accent.
Something that breaks up all the soft fabrics and gives the room another texture.
I especially like baskets because they’re pretty and they hide things.
Blankets.
Dog toys.
Magazines.
The random stuff that somehow migrates into a living room.
In our house?
Probably something belonging to Luna.
Naturally.
🛒 Shop Woven Baskets & Natural Textures: Woven seagrass blanket basket · Rattan woven tray
Pretty enough to leave out. Useful enough to earn the floor space.
5. I Added Fall Without Covering the Room in Fall
Budget: approximately $20–$30
I don’t need every surface announcing the season.
One bowl of small pumpkins?
Cute.
A few stems in a vase?
Done.
A candle?
Absolutely.
One little fall arrangement on the coffee table?
Plenty.
I’ve been leaning more and more toward this philosophy:
Fewer pieces. Bigger impact.
I’d rather have one beautiful arrangement than seven little signs telling me it’s fall.
I know it’s fall.
Well…
Technically the thermometer here in Arizona may disagree.
But we’re moving forward anyway.

6. I Left Money for One Thing I Just Loved
Budget: approximately $30–$40
Not everything in your house has to pass some complicated decorating test.
Sometimes you see something and think:
Oh, I love that.
That’s enough.
Maybe it’s a funky lamp.
Maybe it’s a colorful pillow.
Maybe it’s a vase.
Maybe it’s a little piece of art.
Maybe it’s something slightly weird that BigDog looks at and says:
“Where exactly is that going?”
And you already know exactly where it’s going.
Those pieces are important because they’re what keep a room from looking like you bought the entire thing off one showroom floor.
I want our house to look collected.
Lived in.
A little boho.
A little unexpected.
And definitely ours.
🛒 Add One Gigi Layer: Boho ceramic vase · Boho rattan table lamp
This is the piece that doesn’t have to match. It just has to make you smile.
So Where Did the $200 Go?
Here’s the rough budget I gave myself:
| Cozy Layer | Budget |
|---|---|
| Textured throw | $35 |
| Pillow covers | $30 |
| Warm lighting/candles | $30 |
| Basket/natural texture | $35 |
| Simple fall accents | $25 |
| One personality piece | $35 |
| TOTAL | $190 |
That leaves me about $10 of wiggle room.
And I like wiggle room.
Because tax exists.
Prices change.
And occasionally Gigi sees something she wasn’t supposed to see.
Important: I treat these as spending caps, not targets. If I find the throw for $22, I don’t automatically have to spend the other $13 somewhere else.
Money not spent still counts as winning.
What I Didn’t Buy
This may be more important than what I did.
I didn’t buy a new sofa.
I didn’t buy a new coffee table.
I didn’t replace perfectly good lamps just because I wanted a different look.
I didn’t buy an entire collection of matching fall decorations.
I didn’t buy something for every empty surface.
And I didn’t replace our everyday personality with a temporary seasonal personality.
Our house still looks like us.
It just feels like fall.
That’s exactly what I wanted.
BEFORE YOU SHOP, TRY THIS
Walk into your living room and take a picture.
Seriously.
Pictures show you things your eyes stop noticing.
Then ask yourself:
What’s actually missing?
Does the room need color?
Texture?
Better lighting?
Something soft?
Something natural?
Does it actually need anything?
That last question can save you a lot of money.
The Pieces I Think Are Worth Spending On
If you’re working with a limited budget, I wouldn’t divide the money evenly across twenty little things.
I’d put more of it into pieces you’ll keep using.
BUY ONCE, USE BEYOND FALL
🛒 Textured Throw: Chunky knit textured throw · Rust, olive & camel boho throws
Fall → winter → chilly movie nights.
🛒 Pillow Covers: Fall pillow covers in rust, olive & mustard · Boho textured pillow covers
Change the covers instead of buying new pillows.
🛒 Woven Basket: Woven seagrass blanket basket
Blankets now. Luna’s toys later. 😂
🛒 Warm Table Lamp: Boho rattan table lamp · Warm ceramic table lamp
This changes the room every single night, not just during fall.
🛒 Battery Candles: Flameless LED pillar candles with remote & timer
Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and beyond.
That’s where I’d rather put the money.
Cozy Doesn’t Have to Mean Beige
Can we talk about this for a minute?
Somewhere along the way, “cozy home” started looking like everything had to be cream, tan and white.
That’s beautiful if you love it.
But I need a little more going on.
Give me texture.
Give me warm colors.
Give me wood.
Give me a little boho pattern.
Give me something old next to something new.
Give me a lamp that looks like I found it somewhere interesting.
Cozy should look like the person who lives there.
Your room doesn’t have to look like mine.
Mine doesn’t have to look like Pinterest.
And neither one of us has to buy a truckload of new stuff every season.
Luna Has One Decorating Requirement
Everything I just said is irrelevant to Luna.
Luna’s cozy-home checklist is much shorter:
Is there a blanket?
Is Mom sitting on it?
Can I get between Mom and the blanket?
Excellent.
Interior design complete.
She may actually be onto something.

The Goal Was Never a New Living Room
That’s really what this little $200 experiment reminded me.
Sometimes when we’re tired of a room, we assume we need to replace things.
Usually we don’t.
Sometimes the sofa just needs a good throw.
The chair needs a pillow.
The room needs warmer light.
The coffee table needs something natural.
And maybe you need to move something you’ve had for ten years to the other side of the room and suddenly remember why you bought it.
My living room doesn’t need to look brand new.
I don’t want brand new.
I want comfortable.
Collected.
Warm.
A little colorful.
A little boho.
A little imperfect.
A room where BigDog can relax, Luna can claim whichever blanket I intended to use, and I can sit down at the end of the day and think:
Yep. This feels like us.
And if I can get there for less than $200?
Even better.
Because cozy is wonderful.
Cozy with money left in the bank is better.
