I keep seeing people talk about the return of hippie fashion.
Flare jeans are back.
Fringe is back.
Crochet is back.
Peasant blouses are back.
Earth tones are back.
And apparently the ’70s are having another moment.
Meanwhile, some of us are standing over here thinking:
Did hippie style ever actually leave?
Maybe it disappeared from the fashion magazines for a while.
But there are women who never stopped loving the movement, color, denim, turquoise, embroidery and slightly rebellious attitude that comes with it.
I’m one of them.
At 68, I’m not interested in recreating exactly what somebody wore to Woodstock.
I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a costume.
And I’m certainly not trying to look 25.
I want to take the things I’ve always loved and wear them in a way that works for the woman I am now.
That’s modern hippie style to me.
And fall might be the best season for it.
1. Flare Jeans + a Flowy Blouse
Let’s start with a classic.
Flare jeans and a flowy blouse.
You don’t need giant bell bottoms dragging across the parking lot.
Unless that’s what you want.
A subtle flare or bootcut jean gives you that little nod to the ’70s without turning the outfit into a history lesson.
Then add a relaxed blouse.
Maybe embroidered.
Maybe floral.
Maybe rust, turquoise, olive or cream.
Add a necklace and comfortable ankle boots.
That’s modern hippie.
🛍️ Try the Look: Pair comfortable flare or bootcut jeans with an embroidered or flowy blouse, then add ankle boots and statement jewelry for an easy modern hippie fall outfit.
2. Wide-Leg Pants + a Simple Tee + Turquoise
Sometimes the pants should do the talking.
I love wide-leg and flowy pants because they’re comfortable without looking like I gave up.
Give me a beautiful fall print or a great earthy color and I’m halfway dressed.
Then keep everything else simple.
A black tee.
Cream tee.
White blouse.
Maybe denim.
Then add turquoise.
That little pop of turquoise against rust, brown, olive, black or denim is one of my favorite combinations.
Easy.
Colorful.
And comfortable enough to actually live your life in.
3. Graphic Tee + Long Cardigan + Jeans
This is one of those outfits I could practically live in.
Start with a graphic tee.
Add jeans.
Throw on a long cardigan.
Then add your jewelry and comfortable shoes.
That’s it.
If the tee has a vintage feel, you’ve already brought in a little hippie attitude.
The cardigan makes it fall.
The jewelry makes it yours.
And nobody needs to spend 45 minutes figuring out how to put the outfit together.
Those are my favorite kinds of clothes now.
4. Maxi Dress + Denim Jacket + Boots
Don’t put away the maxi dresses yet.
Fall is one of the best times to give them another life.
Take a flowy maxi dress and add a denim jacket.
Then swap sandals for ankle boots.
Add a crossbody bag and a couple of necklaces.
Suddenly that summer dress has an entirely different personality.
And if you live somewhere warm like I do in Arizona, this makes a whole lot more sense than pretending September means heavy sweaters and wool coats.
Sometimes fall is a denim jacket and wishful thinking.
5. Cream Blouse + Fringe Vest + Jeans
This is probably one of the easiest hippie formulas in the whole post.
Start with things you may already own:
Jeans.
A cream or white blouse.
Then add one piece with personality.
A fringe vest.
Crochet vest.
Embroidered vest.
Suede-look vest.
That’s what makes this feel modern instead of costume-y.
You’re not wearing fringe, bell bottoms, a headband, round sunglasses and a peace-sign necklace all at once.
You’re borrowing one element from the past and putting it into an outfit you would actually wear today.
🛍️ Easy Fall Update: A fringe, crochet or embroidered vest can give jeans and a simple blouse instant hippie personality without requiring a completely new outfit.
6. Earth-Tone Pants + Denim Shirt
This is another combination I love for fall.
Rust pants with denim.
Olive with denim.
Chocolate brown with denim.
Mustard with denim.
Then add turquoise jewelry.
Suddenly you’ve got all those gorgeous fall colors without looking like you’re trying to coordinate with a pumpkin patch.
A relaxed denim shirt also works as a lightweight jacket.
Leave it open over a tee or tank when the weather is warmer.
Button it up when it cools down.
Roll the sleeves.
Don’t overthink it.
Hippie style was never supposed to look overly perfect anyway.
7. The Fall Kimono + Jeans + a Basic Tee
Kimonos aren’t just summer clothes.
I’m keeping mine out.
For fall, I love deeper colors and richer prints.
Paisley.
Dark florals.
Rust.
Teal.
Burgundy.
Olive.
Mustard.
Vintage-inspired prints.
Put one over jeans and a basic tee and you’ve got an outfit.
The kimono gives you movement and color without adding the weight of a heavy sweater.
That’s especially helpful when your version of fall is still somewhere in the 80s or 90s.
8. Flare Jeans + Graphic Tee + Vest
Now we’re turning the hippie dial up a little.
Flare jeans.
Graphic tee.
Vest.
That’s definitely giving us ’70s.
But keep the pieces modern and comfortable and it doesn’t feel like a costume.
Add sneakers if you want the outfit casual.
Add boots if you want more fall.
Layer on some bracelets.
Grab a crossbody.
Done.
And yes, women over 60 can absolutely wear graphic tees and flare jeans together.
The universe will survive.
9. A Boho Dress + a Moto Jacket
Here’s where things get interesting.
I don’t think modern hippie style has to stay soft all the time.
Take a flowy floral or boho dress and add a moto-style jacket.
Now you’ve got feminine movement mixed with a little edge.
I love combinations like that because they don’t fit perfectly into one style category.
Neither do most women.
Why should our clothes?
A woman can love flowers and motorcycles.
Turquoise and black.
Flowy dresses and boots.
Soft and tough.
We’re allowed to contain multitudes.
10. A Long Skirt + Tee + Denim Jacket
If you’ve got a flowy maxi skirt or dress hanging in your closet, bring it into fall.
Add a simple tee.
Throw on a denim jacket.
Add boots or sneakers.
Then bring in the jewelry.
This is another outfit where accessories make all the difference.
Without them, you’ve got a perfectly nice casual outfit.
Add turquoise, stacked bracelets and an interesting bag?
Now it feels like you.
11. Jeans + White Blouse + ALL the Accessories
This is proof that you don’t need special “hippie clothes” to dress hippie.
Start with:
Jeans.
White or cream blouse.
That’s about as basic as it gets.
Now add:
A turquoise necklace.
Stacked bracelets.
Big earrings.
A fringed crossbody.
Maybe a scarf.
Maybe boots.
Maybe a vest.
The clothes didn’t change much.
The personality did.
That’s why I always tell women not to underestimate accessories.
They can completely change an outfit without requiring another closet full of clothes.
12. The Outfit You Already Own + One Hippie Piece
This might be the best formula of all.
Get dressed normally.
Then add one hippie piece.
Maybe it’s:
- A fringed bag
- A crochet vest
- A kimono
- Turquoise jewelry
- Flare jeans
- An embroidered blouse
- A vintage-inspired graphic tee
- A patchwork cardigan
That’s it.
You don’t have to dress head-to-toe in one aesthetic.
Actually, I think modern style gets much more interesting when we don’t.
Modern Hippie Style Isn’t a Costume
This is probably the most important distinction for me.
There’s a difference between being inspired by the ’60s and ’70s and trying to recreate them exactly.
I don’t need to dress like I’m going to Woodstock to prove I’m a hippie at heart.
I can take the things I loved then and mix them with the things I love now.
Maybe it’s flare jeans with a modern blouse.
A graphic tee under a cardigan.
A maxi dress with a moto jacket.
Turquoise jewelry with an Amazon top.
An old necklace with new jeans.
That’s what keeps personal style alive.
It changes because we change.
And It Doesn’t Have to Make You Look Younger
I want to say this because I think women get sold this idea constantly.
“How to look 10 years younger.”
“Colors that make you look younger.”
“Haircuts that make you look younger.”
“Clothes that make you look younger.”
What if I don’t need my clothes to convince anybody I’m 58?
I’m 68.
There’s nothing wrong with 68.
I want my clothes to make me look like me.
Interesting.
Colorful.
Comfortable.
Confident.
Maybe a little rebellious.
Definitely not invisible.
That’s a much better goal than younger.
Build a Closet That Looks Like You’ve Lived in It
The older I get, the less interested I am in a perfectly coordinated wardrobe.
I want things I’ve collected.
Jewelry that means something.
Clothes I’ve worn a hundred times.
Something vintage.
Something new.
Something inexpensive.
Something I probably paid too much for but still love.
Pieces that remind me of different versions of myself.
Because that’s what getting older actually gives us.
More versions of ourselves.
The young mom.
The working woman.
The wife.
The grandma.
The retired woman.
The woman building something new at 68.
They’re all still in there.
And maybe that’s why hippie style still feels so right to me.
It’s never really been about following the rules.
It’s about freedom.
Wear the Clothes That Still Feel Like You
So if you wore flare jeans decades ago and you still love them?
Wear them.
If turquoise has always made your heart happy?
Pile it on.
If you’re discovering hippie style for the first time at 65, 70 or 75?
Welcome.
There’s no deadline.
You don’t have to dress like you did when you were younger.
And you don’t have to dress like somebody else’s idea of an older woman either.
Take what you loved.
Leave what you didn’t.
Add something new.
Change your mind tomorrow.
That’s personal style.
And this fall, mine is probably going to include denim, flowy pants, turquoise, fringe, flare jeans and at least one thing somebody somewhere thinks a 68-year-old woman shouldn’t be wearing.
Sounds about right.
Don’t dress younger. Don’t dress older. Dress like yourself.
Don’t let your age determine the size of your dreams—or the size of your personality.
