I love Halloween.

I love pumpkins. I love candles. I love a little witchy. I love that moment when fall starts creeping into the house—even here in Arizona, where Mother Nature is still outside acting like it’s July.

What I don’t want is to walk into my living room and wonder if somebody backed a Halloween store up to the front door and unloaded the entire seasonal aisle.

You know what I mean.

I still want my house to look like our house.

I want my color. My boho stuff. My turquoise. My warm woods. My plants. The things we’ve collected. BigDog’s things mixed with mine. Luna probably sitting somewhere she’s not supposed to be.

I don’t want to pack all of that away just because October is coming.

And somewhere along the way, I realized I don’t have to.

At 68, my Halloween decorating philosophy is pretty simple:

Start with the home you already love. Then make it a little spooky.

Start With Fall — Then Let Halloween Sneak In

This is probably the biggest change I’ve made in how I think about seasonal decorating.

Instead of decorating the house for Halloween from scratch, I start with fall.

Warm throws. Pillows. Candles. Pumpkins. Baskets. Wood. Amber glass. Fall florals. Maybe a deeper table runner or some warmer colors around the room.

Then Halloween gets layered over it.

A black candlestick here.

A witchy little something there.

Maybe a couple of ghosts.

Maybe a skeleton who looks like he’s been invited over for cocktails.

The point is that I don’t have to completely redecorate the house twice—once for Halloween and then again on November 1.

I’ve also decided that every damn surface doesn’t need a pumpkin.

There. I said it.

Instead, I like the idea of creating little Halloween moments throughout the house.

Maybe there’s a slightly spooky arrangement on the entry table.

Maybe the coffee bar gets a Halloween mug and a couple of tiny pumpkins.

Maybe the cocktail bar gets darker and moodier with black glassware, candles and something a little unexpected.

The patio can get its own moment.

And suddenly the whole house feels ready for Halloween without looking like Halloween exploded inside it.

That’s much more my style.

Buy Halloween Decor You Can Still Use in November

Now THIS is where I’ve gotten smarter.

Some Halloween decorations have a very short life. October 1. October 31. Goodbye.

But a beautiful amber vase? I’m still using it.

Black candlesticks? Still out.

A rust-colored throw? That’s staying.

Copper accessories, baskets, lanterns, warm pillows, dark florals? Those can carry the house right through Thanksgiving.

And if I’m spending money on something, I love when I can get more than four weeks out of it. This is the same reason I started shopping fall decor on Amazon instead of the Halloween aisle in the first place.

It doesn’t mean I won’t buy something ridiculous just because it makes me smile. I absolutely will.

But I like the foundation of my seasonal decorating to work harder.

Buy It for Halloween — Keep It for Fall

• Amber glass vase — October moody, November harvest, December candlelight.
• Black metal lanterns — indoors or out, all the way to Christmas.
• Copper accents — warm metal that never looks seasonal-specific.
• Rust throw blanket — my single most-used fall purchase.
• Neutral pumpkins — these stay out through Thanksgiving dinner.
• Warm LED candles with a timer — safe around a nosy dog. Ask me how I know.
• Dark floral stems — burgundy and plum do the Halloween work quietly.

Don’t Forget the Coffee Bar

If you’ve been around here for five minutes, you already know coffee is serious business in this house. BigDog is basically the resident barista—I told the whole story in His Coffee Bar, Our Cocktail Bar.

So of course the coffee bar gets decorated.

But again, I don’t think it needs 47 Halloween decorations.

Give me a great seasonal mug, a little pumpkin, maybe a spooky sign or two, and some warm fall color. Done.

It’s the same small ritual I wrote about in my cozy fall morning routine after 60—the decor is really just an excuse to enjoy the coffee more.

• Halloween mug set — buy the set, keep two, gift the rest.
• Pumpkin-shaped mug — works clear through November.
• Small coffee bar sign — one sign. Not five.
• Tiered tray Halloween decor — the easiest little moment in the kitchen.
• Fall coffee accessories — canisters, spoons, a linen towel in a warm color.

And the Cocktail Bar Gets Moody

Because we’re adults, we also have the other bar.

The cocktail bar is where Halloween can get a little darker. Black cocktail napkins. Dark glassware. Candlelight. Maybe a skull tucked somewhere unexpected.

Honestly, Halloween and a cocktail bar were made for each other. And if the weather cooperates, that setup moves straight outside for a patio pour.

A Little Something for the Cocktail Bar

• Black or smoked glassware — moody without a single ghost involved.
• Halloween cocktail napkins — cheap, disposable, high impact.
• Flameless taper candles — candlelight you can turn off from the couch.
• Black candle holders — vary the heights, it looks intentional.
• Skull decanter — the unexpected piece everybody comments on.
• Dark serving tray — corrals the whole bar so it doesn’t look cluttered.

Let the Patio Get in on It Too

Arizona fall is weird.

The calendar says fall. Pinterest says fall. My brain says fall.

And the thermometer says, absolutely not.

But the patio is still one of my favorite places to make seasonal changes. I don’t need hay bales and an entire pumpkin patch. A wreath, some lanterns, a couple of outdoor pillows and a few pumpkins around the door can completely change the feeling—I broke that down in my fall patio decorating ideas and again in fall porch decor ideas for a cozy front door welcome.

And once the Arizona evenings finally cool down, that’s where I want to be anyway.

Coffee in the morning. Cocktails later. Luna supervising the entire operation.

Shop a Cozy Halloween Patio

• Fall wreath — one change that does the most work.
• Outdoor solar lanterns — no cords, no batteries, no bending down.
• Outdoor fall pillow covers — get weather-resistant fabric, especially in the sun.
• Weather-resistant pumpkins — real ones don’t survive an Arizona October.
• Solar string lights — warm white, not blue-white. Trust me.
• Fall doormat — the cheapest seasonal refresh there is.

Yes, You Can Buy the Silly Thing

Here’s the other part of decorating that I think we sometimes forget.

Your house is allowed to make you laugh.

Everything doesn’t have to be tasteful. Everything doesn’t have to coordinate. And everything sure as hell doesn’t have to look like somebody’s perfectly curated Instagram feed.

If you see a ridiculous little ghost and it makes you smile every time you walk past it? Buy the ghost.

If you want the skeleton? Get the skeleton.

If you find a witch decoration that looks like she’s had three margaritas and given up on everybody? Frankly, I probably want her too.

Those are the things that make a home personal.

Grown-Up Halloween Doesn’t Have to Mean Beige

This might be my biggest problem with the phrase “grown-up Halloween decor.”

Why does grown-up always seem to mean we’re supposed to remove all the color?

Suddenly everything is cream. Cream pumpkin. Cream blanket. Cream candle. Cream ghost.

Pretty soon even the witch is beige.

No thank you.

I spent enough years figuring out what I actually like. I’m not giving it up now. It’s the same argument I make about clothes in Vintage-Inspired Without Looking Dated—grown-up doesn’t have to mean invisible.

My version of grown-up Halloween can have turquoise. It can have rust and purple and black and orange. It can have patterns.

It can have vintage pieces sitting next to something I found on Amazon.

It can be boho. It can be weird. It can be colorful.

Because the goal isn’t to make my house look like somebody else’s Pinterest board.

The goal is to make my house feel even more like us.

My Halloween Decorating Rule After 60

Maybe this is really what has changed for me.

When I was younger, I thought decorating meant following a theme.

Now? I decorate according to a feeling.

I want fall to feel warm. I want Halloween to feel fun. I want my home to feel collected rather than staged.

And I want the people who walk through my front door to know something about the people who live here.

That’s the difference.

So no, I don’t want my house to look like a Halloween store.

But I absolutely want somebody to walk in during October, look around and think: Oh yeah. Gigi lives here.

That’s exactly the point.
