There comes a point in life when you stop dressing to impress everyone else and start dressing for yourself.

For me, that happened after retirement.

After spending seven years working as an office manager in a funeral home, my wardrobe became almost entirely black. It made sense for the job, but somewhere along the way, I realized I’d tucked away a part of myself too.

Then retirement came.

And with it, something I didn’t expect.

Freedom.

Freedom to wear color again.

Freedom to wear flowy dresses on a Tuesday morning.

Freedom to embrace the modern hippie style that had always been hiding inside me.

Now every fall, when the fashion magazines tell me what I should be wearing, I smile…and then I open my own closet.

Because my style still feels like me.

And I hope yours does too.

Style Has Nothing to Do With Age

Somewhere along the way, society decided women over 60 should dress differently.

More neutral.

More conservative.

Less colorful.

Less noticeable.

I’ve never understood that.

If anything, I feel more confident today than I did twenty years ago.

I’ve earned every laugh line.

Every gray hair.

Every lesson life has handed me.

Why would I hide now?

Your clothes should tell your story—not someone else’s.

My Arizona Fall Is Different

Living in Arizona means “fall” doesn’t always look like the pictures on Pinterest.

While other parts of the country are pulling out heavy coats, we’re often enjoying crisp mornings followed by afternoons in the 80s.

That means my wardrobe is all about versatility.

I don’t need bulky sweaters.

I need lightweight layers that work with our desert weather.

That’s why I reach for pieces that I can mix, match, and wear throughout the day.

My Fall Wardrobe Starts With Dresses

One thing you’ll rarely hear me say is:

“Well, summer’s over. Time to put all my dresses away.”

Nope.

I wear dresses almost year-round.

The only thing that changes is what I pair them with.

A lightweight cardigan.

A denim jacket.

A cozy kimono.

A pair of comfortable ankle boots.

Suddenly my favorite summer dress becomes the perfect fall outfit.

Layers Make Everything Better

If there’s one styling trick I’ve learned, it’s this:

Layers add personality without adding bulk.

I love throwing on a soft cardigan while I’m drinking my morning coffee with Luna on the patio.

Later in the day, if the Arizona sun warms things up, I simply take it off.

Easy.

Comfortable.

Practical.

That’s real life.

Comfortable Shoes Are Non-Negotiable

Gone are the days of buying shoes because they’re cute and hoping they’ll magically become comfortable.

Not happening.

If I’m going to spend the day walking, shopping, or wandering through a fall market with Big Dog, my feet are coming first.

Thankfully, comfort has come a long way.

Today’s ankle boots, sneakers, and supportive sandals can be both stylish and easy on your feet.

Accessories Tell Your Story

I’ve always believed accessories are where your personality shines.

A favorite ring.

A layered necklace.

A crossbody bag you’ve carried for years.

These little details say more about who we are than following the latest trend ever could.

Some of my jewelry reminds me of my dad.

Some pieces make me think of special moments with family.

Others simply make me smile.

That’s what style should do.

My Favorite Fall Morning

If you stopped by my house on an October morning, here’s what you’d probably find.

The coffee is brewing.

Luna is already making sure no birds have invaded the backyard.

I’m sitting on the patio wearing a soft cardigan over a flowy dress with my favorite necklace.

Big Dog is wandering outside with his coffee, asking what’s on the agenda for the day.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing expensive.

Just comfortable clothes that fit the life we’ve built together.

Those moments remind me that style isn’t about impressing anyone.

It’s about feeling at home in your own life.

Wear What Makes You Smile

One of the best parts about getting older is caring less about what everyone else thinks.

That’s a gift.

These days, I don’t ask if something is trendy.

I ask:

“Will I actually wear this?”

“Does this feel like me?”

If the answer is yes…

It belongs in my closet.

If the answer is no…

It stays on the rack.

It’s really that simple.

Final Thoughts

When I retired, I thought I was leaving behind a job.

I didn’t realize I was rediscovering myself.

Part of that journey has been finding my own style again.

Not the style magazines tell me to wear.

Not the style someone my age is “supposed” to wear.

Just mine.

So this fall, don’t worry about dressing like everyone else.

Wear what makes you feel confident.

Wear what makes you smile.

Wear what still feels like you.

Because after 60, authenticity never goes out of style.
