Summer is winding down and I’m already thinking about fall. Not in a rushing-the-season kind of way — more like the way I think about coffee before I get out of bed. I know it’s coming and I want to be ready.

Last spring I put together a modern hippie capsule wardrobe and you all loved it — it was the most viewed post on this site. So I’m doing it again, but this time for fall. Same energy: comfortable, flowy, boho, real. Just with deeper colors, layering pieces, and a reason to finally wear boots again.

This is not about buying a whole new wardrobe. It’s about 8 to 10 pieces that all work together and feel like you. Here’s what I’m building mine around this year — all from Amazon, all with clickable links so you can grab what speaks to you.

1. The Foundational Layer: A Boho Long-Sleeve Top

Every fall capsule starts here. I want something I can wear on its own in early fall and layer under a cardigan once it actually gets cool. The Falechay Boho Long Sleeve Flowy Top is exactly that. It’s lacy, crewneck, comes in earthy fall tones like apricot, sage, and rust, and somehow manages to look polished and effortless at the same time. At around $23, it’s a steal. I have the apricot and it photographs beautifully.

2. Wide Leg Pants That Go With Everything

Wide leg pants are the backbone of this whole capsule. They work with every top, every boot, and every cardigan on this list. I’ve been reaching for mine constantly.

Two great options depending on your vibe:

  • The ANRABESS Palazzo Wide Leg Pants — smocked high waist, super flowy, available in fall prints and solid earth tones. Under $20 with Prime and they look way more expensive than they are.
  • The BTFBM Wide Leg Palazzo Pants — slightly more structured, high waist, great for cooler fall days. I love these for a morning patio coffee look.

Both are comfortable enough to wear all day and look intentional enough that you’ll get compliments.

3. The Statement Piece: A Fall Boho Maxi Dress

Every good capsule needs a statement piece — something you throw on and instantly feel like yourself. For fall, that’s a long-sleeve maxi dress in a rich color or print.

The MASCOMODA Fall Long Sleeve Boho Maxi Dress is my top pick this season. Tiered hem, button neck, ruffle details — it has that romantic, easy quality that I’ve always loved about boho dressing. It comes in a beautiful cream/beige that works with everything, plus deeper tones. Under $24 on Prime and it photographs gorgeous. Wear it to a pumpkin patch, a fall festival, or just to run errands when you want to feel like you have your life together.

4. The Layering Piece: An Aztec or Tribal Print Cardigan

This is what makes a fall boho wardrobe feel fall. A chunky, cozy cardigan in an Aztec or tribal print is everything. You throw it on over any of the pieces above and suddenly you look like you planned your whole outfit.

I’m obsessed with the FERBIA Women Boho Aztec Open Front Cardigan. It has over 2,700 reviews and comes in army green, camel, burgundy, and more deep fall colors. Long sleeves, pockets, open front — it’s a classic piece that works every single year. Around $45 but it looks and feels like twice that. This is one of those pieces you’ll still be wearing in three years.

Want something a little simpler? The WDIRARA Open Front Long Boho Cardigan is a gorgeous option too — drapey, Perfect for daily wear, office, outdoor, street, holiday, weekend, travel in spring, fall.

Nothing says modern hippie fall like a good pair of ankle boots. And these do not have to cost a fortune.

The Ctreela Boho Fringe Slip-On Ankle Booties are exactly what I’d reach for. Chunky heel, fringe detail, retro gypsy vibe, faux suede — they’re comfortable, affordable (under $30), and they go with every single piece in this capsule. Slip-on makes them easy for those mornings when you just can’t deal with laces.

6. The Jewelry: A Boho Necklace Set

I don’t spend a lot on jewelry but I wear it every day. A good set of layered boho necklaces can pull an entire look together — and you don’t need to spend $80 to get something that looks beautiful.

The SAILIMUE 6-Piece Boho Vintage Pendant Necklace Set is a gem. Wood beads, feathers, peace signs, dragonflies — it’s hippie without being costume-y. The pieces work separately or stacked. They’re earthy and warm, perfect for fall tones. Under $15 for the whole set.

How to Wear It: 3 Easy Fall Outfits From This Capsule

The whole point of a capsule is that everything works together. Here are three complete looks you can put together from the pieces above:

Outfit 1 — The Patio Morning: Flowy boho top + ANRABESS palazzo pants + cardigan thrown over + the necklace set. Add a mug of coffee and call it a lifestyle.

Outfit 2 — The Fall Errand Run: MASCOMODA maxi dress + Ctreela ankle boots + FERBIA Aztec cardigan. This is the “I look pulled together but I’ve been running since 7am” outfit. My favorite kind.

Outfit 3 — The Cozy Gathering: BTFBM wide leg pants + Falechay long sleeve lacy top + ankle boots + necklace set. Wear this to Thanksgiving or a fall cookout and you’ll feel exactly like yourself.

My Honest Take

I’m 67 and I wear what I want. That has been the whole point of this blog from the beginning. After years of black funeral home uniforms and years before that of dressing for everyone else’s comfort — I dress for myself now.

Fall boho style is forgiving, comfortable, and genuinely beautiful. The fabrics are soft. The silhouettes are easy. And nothing here requires Spanx or suffering.

Start with one or two pieces and build from there. You don’t need the whole capsule at once. But I promise once you put on a flowy maxi dress and a good cardigan in October, you’re going to wonder why you waited so long.

Which piece is calling your name? Drop it in the comments — I love knowing what you’re reaching for this fall.
