I Am Not Giving Up My Dresses in Fall. Here Is How I Wear Them.

Let me be clear about something.
I am not giving up my dresses when September rolls around.
Not a chance.
I know some people pack away their dresses with their sandals and consider fall officially a pants-and-sweaters situation. That is a valid choice. But it is not mine.
I love dresses too much. I love how easy they are. I love how they feel. I love that you put on one thing and you are dressed.
Fall just means I layer them differently.
And honestly? A fall maxi or midi dress — in deep burgundy, warm rust, rich floral — layered with a long cardigan and ankle boots is one of the most beautiful outfits I put together all season. Easier than most of my other looks and somehow the most striking.
If you are over 60 and you love a modern hippie aesthetic, a fall dress is not a contradiction. It is a cornerstone.
Why Maxi and Midi Specifically
I am partial to longer lengths. Not because shorter is wrong — wear what you love — but because maxi and midi dresses have a particular quality that I think gets even better with age.
They move. They flow. They do not require you to think about your legs.
And in a bohemian context, a long dress has that earthy, unhurried feeling that is central to the whole aesthetic. It is not a cocktail dress. It is not a work dress. It is a dress that says I chose this because it makes me feel like myself.
A maxi sweeps the floor or comes close to it. A midi hits somewhere between the knee and the ankle. Both are beautiful. Both work. The choice comes down to what feels right for your body and your mood on any given day.
The Fall Colors and Prints That Make It Work
This is where fall earns its name.
The summer version of this dress is light: white, pale blue, soft lavender, warm sand. Beautiful.
The fall version is richer. Warmer. Deeper.
Deep burgundy — one of the most universally flattering colors on women over 60, particularly those with gray, silver, or white hair. It is warm, it is rich, it is unmistakably fall.
Warm rust or terracotta — bright without being loud. Earthy without being muddy. This is one of those colors that makes the whole outfit feel intentional.
Chocolate or warm brown — grounding and beautiful. A brown maxi dress with a cream duster and tan ankle boots is a complete look in three pieces.
Olive or forest green — unexpected and wonderful. Less common than rust or burgundy and somehow more interesting because of it.
Warm fall florals — not spring florals, which tend to be lighter and brighter. Fall florals have ochre, deep mauve, burgundy, rust, sage in the print. They read as earthy and seasonal without hitting you over the head with it.
Rich paisley or batik prints — these are deeply boho and beautiful in fall tones. If you find one in a rust-and-cream or a burgundy-and-gold colorway, it is a full outfit on its own.
The One-Dress, One-Layer Formula
This is my favorite thing about fall dresses.
The formula is almost insultingly simple:
One dress + one layer + the right shoes = done.
That is all.
A fall maxi dress in deep burgundy + a long open-front duster cardigan in camel or cream + flat ankle boots in brown leather.
One piece. One layer. One pair of shoes. You look warm, grounded, intentional, and beautiful.
No complicated outfit-building. No matching separates. No “does this go with that?” You put on the dress. You throw the duster over it. You step into your boots.
Done.
This is the kind of dressing I am interested in at this point in my life. The kind that is easy without looking like you didn’t think about it.
More Outfit Formulas I Love
Fall maxi dress (burgundy, rust, or warm floral) + long boho duster or kimono cardigan in a complementary earth tone + flat ankle boots + woven tote bag.
This is the easiest and most complete look I put together in fall. One dress plus one layer and it is done.
Outfit 2: The Chunky Knit Layer
Midi dress in olive or camel + oversized chunky knit sweater layered on top (belted loosely if you want definition, or open and relaxed) + ankle boots.
The sweater-over-dress combination is deeply cozy and deeply bohemian. Wear the sweater slightly open or loosely tucked to let the dress show below.
Outfit 3: The Aztec Cardigan Look
A simpler midi dress — solid color, nothing competing — + a personality-forward Aztec or tribal print cardigan + ankle boots + stacked bracelets.
When the cardigan has the pattern, the dress can be simple. When the dress has the print, the cardigan can be solid. The two pieces take turns.
Outfit 4: The Dressed-Up Version
A rich paisley or floral maxi dress + a fitted cropped boho jacket or structured denim jacket + low-heeled ankle boots + gold layered necklaces.
This is the fall dress outfit I wear to dinner, to an event, to wherever I want to feel like I made an effort without actually making much effort.
Outfit 5: The Simplest Version
A maxi dress in a rich solid color + just a long pendant necklace and a woven bag + ankle boots.
No cardigan. No layer. Just the dress and the right details. This works on warmer fall days or in warmer climates.
The Shoe Question
Ankle boots are my first answer, always.
They finish the fall maxi look in a way that sandals cannot once the temperatures actually drop. A low-heeled or flat ankle boot in brown, cognac, or tan leather or suede — that is the pairing that makes the whole thing click.
But I also love:
- Clogs — warm, earthy, and very boho. A wooden-heeled clog under a fall maxi is a very good thing.
- Flat knee-high boots — if you want the warmth. These disappear under a maxi dress and just add boots at the top.
- Low block-heel boots — a little more structure. A little more polish. Still completely wearable and comfortable.
For midi dresses specifically, you can see the shoe a little more — it peeks out at the hem. So ankle boots or clogs or a low block heel all work and all show a bit. This is where you can have some fun with a boot that has a little personality.
A Note on Fit and Length
Maxi dresses that are too tight at the hips or chest lose all their charm. You want these to flow. You want some ease in the fabric. If a dress hugs, it is not the right one.
For length: a true maxi should graze the floor or come very close. If it hits mid-calf, it is really a midi, which is also beautiful but a different silhouette. Neither is wrong — just know what you are buying.
For fabric in fall: look for something with a little more weight than summer fabrics. A cotton-modal blend, a soft ponte, a woven fabric, a heavier rayon. Something that drapes beautifully in cooler air.
The Honest Part
I wore a lot of unflattering dresses for a lot of years.
Bodycon things that I convinced myself looked right. Shift dresses that did not do anything for anyone. Wrap dresses that were always on the verge of unwrapping themselves at the worst possible moment.
A flowy fall maxi or midi in an earthy tone is none of those things.
It is comfortable. It moves. It flatters by not trying to define anything — it just drapes and flows and lets you move.
And after 60, that is exactly the relationship I want with my clothes.
Easy. Beautiful. Mine.
