Boho Kimonos, Long Cardigans & Hippie Layers After 60: Where to Find the Looks We Love

Because some of us never outgrew our love of fringe, flowing fabrics, turquoise jewelry, and a little 1970s attitude.

It Started With a Pinterest Comment

The other morning, I was sitting with my coffee, doing my usual Pinterest checking, when a woman named Jeannie left a comment on one of my fashion pins.

The pin featured a woman with short white hair, jeans, boots, turquoise jewelry, and a beautiful flowing boho kimono layered over the whole outfit.

My kind of outfit!

But Jeannie had a complaint. She clicked through to the shopping collection, and nothing looked like the outfit in the picture.

And you know what? She was right.

I had used the photo as style inspiration, but the collection featured sweaters and cardigans that didn’t really capture that particular look.

So I thanked her and created a new pin featuring one of the actual sweaters.

Then Jeannie came back.

She explained that she loved the original outfit and that those kinds of clothes were hard to find. She thanked me for listening and said she was looking forward to seeing more.

Well, Jeannie, you got me thinking.

Because finding the kind of boho clothing we love shouldn’t feel like searching for buried treasure.

And yet, sometimes it does.

I’m 68, and I Still Love My Hippie Clothes

I’ve loved that relaxed, colorful, slightly rebellious style for as long as I can remember.

Give me a great pair of jeans, some boots, a flowing kimono, and turquoise jewelry, and I’m happy.

I love fringe. I love crochet. I love embroidered details, interesting prints, and clothes that move when I walk.

And no, I don’t believe there’s an expiration date on any of it.

Somewhere along the way, fashion decided women of a certain age needed to dress a certain way.

Apparently, we were supposed to trade personality for practicality.

Who made that rule?

Because I certainly didn’t agree to it.

At 68, I want comfortable clothes. But I also want clothes that make me feel like myself.

And sometimes that means looking like I might have wandered out of a 1970s music festival.

Without having to sleep in a tent.

The Long, Flowing Boho Kimono: My Favorite Way to Make Jeans Interesting

There’s something about a long, colorful kimono that can transform an ordinary outfit.

Start with jeans and a plain T-shirt. Add a flowing floral or paisley kimono.

Suddenly, you’ve got an outfit.

No complicated styling required.

I especially love kimonos with a little movement. Maybe fringe along the bottom, a beautiful print, or sleeves that flow when you move your arms.

For me, the magic is in the contrast. Simple underneath, personality on top.

And I don’t think you need to save these pieces for vacations or special occasions.

Wear one to lunch. Wear one shopping. Wear one while you’re out enjoying your Saturday.

Life is the occasion.

Crochet Cardigans: A Little Hippie Without Going Full Woodstock

Crochet is another one of those styles I keep coming back to.

It has texture, personality, and that slightly handmade feeling I love.

An open-front crochet cardigan over a simple tank top and jeans is easy. Add boots and a few bracelets, and you’re done.

I especially like lightweight crochet here in Arizona because I can get the layered look without wearing something heavy.

And crochet doesn’t have to mean beige.

Give me turquoise, rust, burgundy, olive green, or a beautiful rich purple.

Although I’ll never turn down a good cream-colored crochet piece either.

The trick is finding something that drapes comfortably instead of clinging where you don’t want it to.

Long Cardigans and Dusters: The Pieces That Work Overtime

A long cardigan is one of those wardrobe pieces that earns its place.

It can go over jeans, leggings, dresses, or wide-leg pants.

And depending on the fabric, it can work across several seasons.

But here’s where I get picky.

I don’t want every cardigan to look like something I’d wear to sit quietly in the corner.

I want interesting textures, unexpected colors, oversized sleeves, dramatic lengths, and maybe even some fringe.

I’m not dressing to disappear.

I’m dressing for the woman I am today.

Let’s Talk About Plus-Size Boho Fashion

Now, this is where things can get frustrating.

A beautiful flowing kimono catches your eye. You click on it, only to discover that the largest size isn’t going to work for you.

Or the description says “one size fits most.”

Most who?

I want room to move. I want a garment that hangs the way it’s supposed to hang. And I don’t want to spend the day adjusting my clothes.

When shopping for kimonos and cardigans, I pay attention to the actual measurements, especially the bust, upper arms, and overall length.

An open front doesn’t automatically mean a comfortable fit.

And oversized doesn’t mean the same thing across every brand.

My advice? Ignore the letter on the tag for a minute and look at the measurements.

The goal isn’t to squeeze yourself into the clothes.

The goal is to find clothes that fit you.

Like This Plus-Size Boho Find: Cobalt Blue Lace Duster

Available in sizes S–5X, this flowing lace duster brings color, texture, and a little drama to an everyday outfit. Pair it with jeans, a simple top, and turquoise jewelry. The 50-inch length and asymmetrical hem make it a beautiful statement layer.

Sizing tip: Check the bust measurements before ordering. The listed 5X measures 56 inches at the bust.

How I’d Style These Boho Layers

You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe to enjoy this look.

The everyday boho outfit: Your favorite jeans, a white or cream T-shirt, a colorful printed kimono, ankle boots, and turquoise jewelry.

The relaxed weekend look: Wide-leg pants, a simple tank, an open crochet cardigan, and comfortable sandals.

The cooler-weather outfit: Dark jeans, a burgundy sweater, a long textured cardigan, and boots.

The slightly dressed-up hippie: A solid-colored maxi dress, a dramatic printed duster, a long necklace, and your favorite statement earrings.

That’s what I love about this style.

The pieces can be interesting without making getting dressed complicated.

Where I’m Looking for Boho Kimonos, Cardigans, and Hippie Layers

Remember that Pinterest comment that started this whole conversation? Well, I listened!

I’ve handpicked a few kimonos, crochet cardigans, and long dusters that capture the boho and hippie style I love. Some are colorful and dramatic, others are a little more relaxed, but they all have personality.

And here’s what’s important: The clothing you see in the photos throughout this post is based on the actual pieces I’ve selected. I’ve styled them on women over 60 to show how I’d put the outfits together, because sometimes we need to see beyond the retailer’s product photo.

Each styled image has a shopping link to the actual clothing piece that inspired it. No clicking on a gorgeous kimono only to land on a completely different sweater!

I’ve also included options with extended sizing, because beautiful boho fashion shouldn’t stop at an XL. Just remember to check the measurements before ordering.

These are pieces I’d wear with my favorite jeans, boots, turquoise jewelry, and a little hippie attitude.

Because at 68, I’m still dressing like me. And I have no plans to stop.

You Don’t Have to Outgrow Your Style

Here’s what I’ve learned after 68 years.

Your personal style doesn’t have to get quieter just because you’ve gotten older.

Maybe you’ve always loved boho fashion. Maybe you’re just discovering it. Or maybe, like me, you’re realizing you don’t need anyone’s permission to wear what makes you happy.

I don’t want to dress younger.

I don’t want to dress older.

I want to dress like me.

And if that means jeans, a flowing kimono, turquoise jewelry, and a little hippie attitude?

Well, that sounds just about perfect.

So thank you, Jeannie, for that Pinterest comment.

You reminded me that sometimes the best ideas don’t come from a content calendar or a fashion trend.

Sometimes they come from one woman telling another woman what she’s actually looking for.

And that’s a conversation worth having.

Now I’m curious: Are you a kimono girl, a crochet-cardigan girl, or a long-duster-and-fringe girl?

Or are you like me and want a little of everything?
