When it comes to fall fashion over 60, I could give you a list of 25 trends.
But here’s the truth:
I’m not wearing 25 different things.
I’m wearing the same handful of pieces over and over again.
And at 68, I’m perfectly okay with that.
Actually, I think I’ve finally figured out that having a closet full of clothes and having a closet that works are two completely different things.
This fall, I’m reaching for comfortable jeans, easy tops, layers I can throw on and take off, good accessories, and clothes that still feel like me.
A little boho.
A little hippie.
A little California casual.
And absolutely no interest in dressing “my age.”
So instead of another giant fall shopping list, here are the 10 pieces I’m actually wearing on repeat this fall.
Some links in this post are affiliate links. If you purchase through one of my links, I may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. I only share pieces I genuinely like, wear, or think make sense for women like us.
1. THE JEANS I DON’T HAVE TO FIGHT WITH
Let’s start with the obvious one.
Jeans.
But I am way past the stage of my life where I’m willing to spend the day tugging at a waistband, holding my stomach in or wondering whether I can sit down comfortably.
If I’m wearing jeans, they have to pass what I call the sit-down test.
Sit.
Bend.
Move.
Breathe.
If I can’t do all four, they’re not coming home with me.
This fall I’m reaching for jeans with enough stretch to be comfortable but enough structure that I still feel put together.
Give me a straight leg, bootcut or a little flare and I’m happy.
And yes, I’m still wearing distressed denim if I feel like it.
Apparently the Fashion Police have lost my address.
2. THE EASY BOHO TOP

This is probably the easiest way for me to make an outfit feel like Gigi.
Jeans + boho top + jewelry.
Done.
I like tops with some movement, an interesting sleeve, embroidery, a print, texture or just enough detail that I don’t need to work very hard at styling them.
The key for me is flowy without becoming a tent.
I want room to move, but I still want some shape.

3. THE LIGHTWEIGHT FALL JACKET
Fall in Arizona is funny.
Everybody else is posting sweaters and boots while we’re still looking at the thermometer going:
Seriously?
So I need layers that don’t require actual winter.
A lightweight jacket gives me the fall look without making me regret every life decision by noon.
I can wear it over a tank or tee, roll the sleeves, leave it open and take it off when the afternoon warms up.
And here’s something I’ve learned:
Your jacket doesn’t have to be boho.
Sometimes a simple jacket over a boho top is exactly what the outfit needs.

4. THE KIMONO THAT FIXES ALMOST EVERYTHING
If you’ve followed me for five minutes, this one probably isn’t surprising.
I love a kimono.
There’s something about throwing one over the simplest outfit that makes me feel finished.
Tank.
Jeans.
Kimono.
Suddenly it looks like I had a plan.
Kimonos are also one of my favorite pieces for women who want coverage without hiding themselves underneath a bunch of fabric.
There’s a difference.
I don’t wear one because I’m trying to disappear.
I wear it because I like the drama.

5. THE BASIC TANK OR TEE THAT DOES ALL THE WORK
This isn’t the glamorous item on the list.
It’s probably one of the most important.
A comfortable tank or tee becomes the foundation for almost everything else I’m wearing.
Under a kimono.
Under a jacket.
With a cardigan.
With jeans.
With wide-leg pants.
The trick is finding one with the right neckline, enough length and fabric that doesn’t cling to every place I’d rather it didn’t.
I don’t need my basics to be exciting.
I need them to do their job.

6. THE COMFORTABLE PANTS THAT AREN’T JEANS
Some days I don’t want jeans.
Period.
That’s when I reach for a pair of relaxed wide-leg, pull-on or flowy pants.
And this is where boho style really earns its keep.
Comfortable doesn’t have to mean sloppy.
Give me a good pair of flowy pants, a simple top, jewelry and sandals or sneakers and I’m perfectly happy.
These are also great for travel because I can actually sit in them for hours without plotting how quickly I can change clothes when I get home.

7. THE CARDIGAN I CAN THROW OVER EVERYTHING
Eventually Arizona cools down.
Eventually.
And when it does, I want a cardigan I can grab without thinking about it.
I’m not looking for anything complicated.
Soft.
Comfortable.
A little oversized without swallowing me.
Long enough to layer.
And preferably something that works with most of the colors already hanging in my closet.
This is one of those pieces I want near the door because it’s coming with me when mornings and evenings finally start getting chilly.

8. THE SUNGLASSES THAT MAKE THE WHOLE THING LOOK BETTER
Arizona doesn’t stop being sunny because Pinterest says it’s sweater weather.
Sunglasses are part of my outfit pretty much year-round.
And I absolutely consider them an accessory.
A great pair of sunglasses can make jeans and a basic tee look intentional in about three seconds.
Plus, with my short white hair, I love a frame that has a little personality.
I’m not trying to disappear.
Remember?

9. THE JEWELRY THAT MAKES A BASIC OUTFIT MINE
This is where the outfit becomes personal.
Turquoise.
Silver.
Gold.
Layered necklaces.
Hoops.
Bracelets.
Whatever makes you happy.
I can wear the simplest jeans and top imaginable, add jewelry, and suddenly it feels like my outfit instead of just clothes.
And that’s something I wish more women understood about personal style.
You don’t always need another shirt.
Sometimes you need to style the shirt you already own differently.

10. THE COMFORTABLE SHOES I’LL ACTUALLY WEAR
Cute shoes that hurt my feet can stay cute on somebody else’s feet.
At 68, I’m done negotiating with shoes.
I want something I can walk in.
Sneakers.
Comfortable ankle boots.
Clogs.
Maybe a good loafer.
Whatever I’m wearing has to work with my actual life.
Because the goal isn’t to put together an outfit that looks great standing perfectly still in front of a mirror.
I want clothes I can live in.

WHAT I’VE STOPPED DOING WITH MY FALL WARDROBE
I’ve stopped believing I need a completely different wardrobe every season.
I’ve stopped buying something just because somebody tells me it’s a “must-have.”
And I’ve definitely stopped asking:
“Am I too old to wear this?”
Now my questions are:
Do I like it?
Is it comfortable?
Will I actually wear it?
Does it work with things I already own?
And most importantly:
Do I feel like myself in it?
That’s a much better shopping list.
THE REAL FALL WARDROBE FORMULA
When I look at these ten pieces, there’s actually a very simple formula hiding underneath all of them:
GOOD BASIC + COMFORTABLE BOTTOM + INTERESTING LAYER + ACCESSORIES
That’s it.
Jeans + tee + kimono + jewelry.
Flowy pants + tank + jacket + sunglasses.
Jeans + boho top + cardigan + comfortable shoes.
You can make a lot of outfits without owning a lot of clothes.
And that is becoming much more appealing to me than a closet packed with things I don’t wear.

STYLE AFTER 60 SHOULD LOOK LIKE YOU
There are a lot of messages out there about how women are supposed to dress after a certain age.
Cover this.
Don’t wear that.
That trend is “too young.”
That color is “too much.”
At 68, I’ve decided I have a much simpler rule:
Wear the damn clothes you like.
I don’t want to spend this stage of my life trying to make myself smaller, quieter or more acceptable.
I want my clothes to feel comfortable.
I want them to fit my real body.
I want a little boho.
A little hippie.
Maybe some turquoise.
Definitely good sunglasses.
And I want to walk out the door feeling like Gigi.
These ten pieces aren’t a list of things every woman over 60 needs to buy.
They’re simply the pieces I’m actually wearing.
And maybe that’s the better way to build a wardrobe anyway.
Not around what somebody says you should wear.
Around what you keep reaching for.
Now tell me: what’s the one piece in your fall closet you’re already wearing on repeat?
