There comes a point when you realize you don’t need another closet full of clothes.

You need better pieces that work harder.

And apparently, I’ve reached the stage of life where I can look at one fall jacket and immediately start mentally dressing it three different ways.

Who knew?

Actually, who am I kidding? I’ve always done that.

But now I pay a lot more attention to what earns space in my closet. If I’m going to spend real money on a jacket, coat, pair of boots, or good piece of jewelry, I don’t want it working one shift.

Baby, you’re going to have to earn your keep.

So when I started looking through Zeagoo’s fall coats, I found one that made me think:

Okay. I could do something with this.

The Jacket That Started This Whole Thing

Winter Fashion Polar Fleece Hooded Coat

$56.99

Why I’m looking at it:
It’s cozy, casual, and neutral enough to work with clothes many of us already own. Instead of building an outfit around something overly trendy, this is the kind of piece I could see throwing over several completely different looks.

And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

One jacket.

Three outfits.

No starting your wardrobe over.

LOOK ONE: Everyday Boho

This is probably the version I’d wear most.

Give me my jeans, a loose blouse, turquoise jewelry, comfortable boots and a jacket and I’m out the door.

I’d start with:

  • relaxed or slightly distressed jeans
  • cream or white boho blouse
  • brown ankle boots
  • turquoise statement necklace
  • layered bracelets
  • crossbody or fringe bag
  • sunglasses

Then throw the gray jacket over everything.

Done.

What I like about this combination is that the jacket doesn’t have to be the “boho” part.

You are.

That’s something I’ve learned about my style. I don’t need fringe hanging from every available body part to prove I’m boho.

Sometimes it’s the jewelry.

Sometimes it’s the bag.

Sometimes it’s turquoise with denim.

Sometimes it’s simply the way I put everything together.

And if you’re traveling or running errands, this is also the outfit where a good pair of sunglasses earns its keep. This would be a natural place for me to add one of our newer sunglass affiliate options rather than forcing an entirely separate product into the post.

Finish the Look

Statement sunglasses + turquoise jewelry

This is where personality takes a basic jeans-and-jacket outfit and makes it yours.

LOOK TWO: Boho, But Make It Dinner

Now we’re keeping the same jacket and changing what’s underneath.

Black.

That’s it. That’s the trick.

Give me:

  • black wide-leg pants or dark jeans
  • black tank, blouse or lightweight sweater
  • leopard or patterned shoe
  • statement earrings
  • layered gold or mixed-metal necklaces
  • black handbag

Then put that same gray jacket over it.

Suddenly it doesn’t look like the jacket you wore to run errands.

This is also where our jewelry affiliate gets to come out and play.

A jacket like this creates a beautiful neutral background for bigger earrings, layered necklaces or a statement piece.

And THAT is how I want us thinking about clothes going into fall and the holidays.

Not:

What new outfit do I need?

But:

What can I add to what I already own that changes the whole damn thing?

That’s a much better question.

LOOK THREE: The Travel Outfit

Now we’re talking my language.

Because if I’m sitting in an airport, riding in a car, visiting family or spending half the day getting somewhere, I am not suffering for fashion.

Absolutely not.

But I’m also not interested in looking like I’ve completely surrendered.

So outfit number three is:

  • black pull-on pants or elevated joggers
  • comfortable tee
  • sneakers
  • crossbody bag
  • sunglasses
  • simple jewelry
  • the same gray jacket

Comfortable enough to travel.

Put together enough to walk straight into lunch when you get there.

And the jacket gives you another advantage: layers.

Airports are cold.

Planes are cold.

Restaurants are cold.

And then you walk outside and suddenly you’re sweating.

Welcome to being a woman who travels.

A removable layer is worth its weight in gold.

But What If Gray Isn’t Your Thing?

Good.

Because I don’t want these posts turning into “Gigi picked one thing, everybody go buy it.”

That’s not the point.

The point is finding the kind of piece that works for your wardrobe.

Zeagoo had several other coats that caught my attention, and they cover very different styles and budgets.

OPTION TWO: The One I’d Pick for My Boho Girls

Zeagoo 70s Vintage Western Fleece Lined Suede Coat

$98.99
Sizes: S–XXL

Okay.

THIS ONE.

If you’re looking at it thinking, Well, that’s Gigi, you’re not wrong.

The warm brown, suede look, fleece trim and very definite 70s Western vibe make this the statement coat of the bunch.

I’d keep everything underneath it simple—jeans, boots, a solid top—and let the coat do the talking.

At almost $100, though, this isn’t an impulse buy.

This is exactly why I want to talk more about cost per wear during Q4.

If you’re going to wear something once, $98.99 may not make sense.

If you’re going to wear it all fall, through holiday travel, into winter and again next year?

Different conversation.

OPTION THREE: The Classic

Zeagoo Classic Stand Collar Button Tweed Coat

$51.99
Sizes: S–5XL
Multiple colors available

Now this is the sleeper.

It doesn’t scream boho.

That’s why I like it.

Give me this coat in a neutral or earthy color and I’ll add the personality myself.

Turquoise earrings.

A printed scarf.

Boots.

A funky handbag.

Maybe one of those pairs of sunglasses we’ve been looking at.

And I particularly like that this one extends through 5XL, because if we’re talking Style After 60 on this site, I want to keep looking for options across a wider range of sizes whenever they’re available.

OPTION FOUR: The Polished Travel Coat

Casual Notch Lapel Single-Breasted Wool Coat

$109.99
Sizes: S–XXL

This is the most polished option of the group.

And I immediately think:

holiday travel.

Jeans and boots.

Black pants and loafers.

A sweater dress.

Christmas dinner.

Thanksgiving weekend.

A winter trip.

This is also exactly the kind of coat that shows why I don’t want every item we feature to cost $29.99.

Some things are worth spending more on if you’re actually going to wear them.

One Jacket Doesn’t Mean One Outfit

This is really the bigger point.

I’ve spent enough years buying clothes to know how easy it is to end up with a closet full of individual outfits instead of a wardrobe.

There’s a difference.

A wardrobe works together.

A good jacket should work with your jeans.

Your black pants.

Your travel clothes.

Your boots.

Your sneakers.

Your jewelry.

Your sunglasses.

Maybe even that slightly ridiculous boho bag you bought because it made you happy.

Mine probably has fringe.

Naturally.

And that’s the approach I’m taking more and more after 60.

Buy fewer things. Make them do more.

Not because women over 60 suddenly need to become practical and sensible.

Please.

You know me better than that.

It’s because I’d rather spend my money on something I really love than five things I’m going to forget I own.

Heading Into Holiday Season…

This little jacket experiment is also giving me ideas.

We’re heading straight toward:

Thanksgiving → holiday parties → Christmas → holiday travel → New Year’s Eve.

And I’ve already been looking at what Zeagoo and Unique Vintage have that could work for those moments.

Add our new jewelry options.

Add sunglasses for travel.

Add shoes and bags where they make sense.

And suddenly we’re not just talking about buying clothes.

We’re building outfits.

Real outfits for real women who still want to have some damn fun getting dressed.

That’s what I want Style After 60 to be.

Not rules.

Not “dress your age.”

Not hiding your body.

Not trying to look 35.

Just figuring out what makes you look in the mirror and think:

Yep. That’s still me.

Same jacket.

Different vibes.

Still me.

And Luna approves.

That counts for something around here.
