The Rug That Finally Made Our Living Room Feel Finished

Have you ever walked into a room in your own house and thought:

Something is missing.

Not enough that you want to tear the whole damn room apart.

The furniture is there. The pillows are there. There’s stuff on the walls. You’ve moved things around. You’ve added a plant. Then another plant, because apparently that’s my answer to everything. 😂

But the room still doesn’t quite feel finished.

That’s been our living room.

And I finally figured out what it needed.

A rug.

Not another basket. Not another pillow. Not another little decorative thing I have to dust.

One good rug.

And I’m beginning to realize that sometimes the piece that finishes a room is also the piece worth spending a little more money on.

BigDog and I Had to Figure Out What “Our Style” Even Was

If you’ve been following my Boho Dream House series, you already know BigDog and I don’t exactly have identical decorating styles.

I’m the boho girl.

Give me warm colors, texture, plants, baskets, turquoise, vintage-looking pieces and things that feel like they were collected over time.

BigDog has his things too.

The motorcycle over the loveseat didn’t exactly come out of a boho decorating catalog.

But that’s the thing about our house.

It belongs to both of us.

It has his story.

It has my story.

And slowly, over the years, it has become our story.

We even slept on a mattress and box spring for eight years because we couldn’t agree on a bed.

EIGHT YEARS.

So when I tell you decorating this house has been a process, I’m not exaggerating.

We’ve learned not to rush it.

I’d rather wait for something that feels right than fill a space just because Pinterest tells me there’s supposed to be something there.

Our Living Room Was Almost There

That’s what was happening in the living room.

I liked the individual pieces.

I liked the colors.

I liked the things we’d collected.

But they didn’t quite feel connected.

Then it hit me.

The floor was the missing piece.

A good area rug does more than cover part of the floor. It can visually pull a seating area together, add warmth and texture, and give all those individual pieces something in common.

That’s what I wanted.

Not something screaming:

LOOK AT MY RUG!

I wanted something that made everything else in the room make sense.

I Want Boho — Not a Boho Costume

This is where shopping gets interesting.

Search “boho rug” online and apparently anything with fringe qualifies.

You know how I feel about that.

It’s the same thing I say about clothes.

I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a costume just because I love boho and hippie style.

And I don’t want my house looking like a boho starter kit either.

I want it to feel collected.

Warm.

Interesting.

A little eclectic.

And personal.

For our house, I’m drawn to rugs with warm earthy colors, faded vintage-style patterns, rust, terracotta, teal, olive, cream and deeper neutrals.

I like a rug that looks like maybe it has a little history—even when UPS delivered it yesterday.

And because Luna lives here too, let’s be practical.

Whatever comes into this house needs to survive actual life.

This Is One Place I’m Willing to Spend More

You know I love finding a bargain.

Give me a cute $25 top and I’m happy all day.

But I’m also starting to think more about where cheap makes sense and where spending a little more makes sense.

A living-room rug is something we’re going to see and use every single day.

BigDog will walk across it.

I’ll walk across it.

Luna will walk across it approximately 487 times before lunch.

Coffee could land on it.

Dog hair definitely will.

Life will happen on it.

So this isn’t necessarily where I’m looking for the absolute cheapest thing I can find.

I’m looking for value.

For this post, I’m concentrating mostly on rugs in roughly the $120–$250 range, depending on size.

Not $1,000 designer rugs.

Calm down. BigDog still lives here.

But rugs that look substantial, work with the rest of the room and hopefully don’t need replacing next year?

That’s something I’m willing to consider spending more on.

5 Boho Rugs I’d Consider for Our Living Room

I’m not giving you 27 rugs to scroll through.

Nobody needs 27 rugs.

I’d rather narrow it down to five different looks and show you why I’d consider each one.

1. The Warm Vintage One

Shop it here: RELEANY Washable Area Rug 8’x10′ (Brick/Brown/Green)

This is probably the first style I’d gravitate toward.

Give me faded rust, warm brown, muted teal or a little olive worked into a vintage-inspired pattern and I’m interested.

I especially like this type of rug when the room already has a mixture of woods, plants, artwork and collected pieces.

It doesn’t have to match everything.

Actually, I’d rather it didn’t.

I just want it to look like it belongs there.

Best for: Warm woods, leather, cream upholstery, plants and an eclectic boho room.

2. The One That Brings the Color

Shop it here: Lahome Felice Boho Tribal Area Rug 5’x7′ (Rust/Dull Teal)

Now we’re speaking my language.

I love color.

But there is a line between colorful and Good Lord, what happened in here?

A rug with muted rust, teal, wine, olive or blue can bring color into a neutral room without taking over the whole thing.

This would be especially good if your sofa and larger furniture pieces are neutral and you’re thinking:

My room needs some personality.

Let the rug do some of the work.

Best for: Neutral furniture that needs warmth and personality.

3. The Quiet Boho One

Shop it here: Madane Washable Area Rug 8’x10′ (Beige/Brown)

Not every boho room needs a colorful rug.

Sometimes the room already has enough going on.

I know. Hard for me to imagine too.

A cream, taupe or warm-neutral rug with an interesting texture or subtle pattern can give you the boho feeling without competing with your artwork, pillows and accessories.

This is the one I’d look at if you’ve already got plenty of color above the floor.

Best for: Colorful rooms that need something calmer to ground them.

4. The “That Looks Expensive” Rug

Shop it here: SAFAVIEH Marrakesh Collection Area Rug 8’x10′ (Beige)

Oh, you know I love this category.

The rug somebody walks in and notices.

Then you get to casually say:

“Oh, that? It wasn’t nearly as expensive as it looks.”

That’s decorating victory right there.

This is where I’d look for something with a more substantial texture, a sophisticated pattern or colors that make it look like you spent considerably more than you actually did.

Best for: Getting the higher-end look without the higher-end price.

5. The One Worth Spending More On

Shop it here: SAFAVIEH Micro-Loop Collection Area Rug 5’x8′ (Beige/Ivory)

And then there’s always one.

The one you stop scrolling for.

The one that makes you immediately start picturing it underneath your coffee table.

If I’m going toward the top of my budget, this is the rug that has to earn it.

Not because the price tag says it’s better.

Because I can see us living with it for years.

That’s the difference.

Spend more on the thing you really love—not simply the thing that costs more.

Best for: Someone who’s ready to buy one really good anchor piece for the room.

Before You Order a Rug Online, Measure the Damn Room

Please.

I’m saving somebody a return here.

Because an 8×10 rug sounds enormous when you’re reading the dimensions on a website.

Until it arrives.

Then suddenly you’re standing there wondering why you bought a postage stamp for your living room.

A common living-room arrangement is to have at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sitting on the rug so the seating area feels connected. An 8×10 is a common size for a standard living room, while larger rooms may need a 9×12 or larger.

But don’t buy based on somebody else’s “standard.”

Measure your room and your furniture.

Better yet, put painter’s tape on the floor in the dimensions of the rug you’re considering. That lets you actually see how much floor the rug will cover and where your furniture will land before you order the thing.

Also check:

  • Whether doors will clear the rug
  • Whether you want the front furniture legs or all the furniture on it
  • Whether the material works for pets and your real life
  • Cleaning instructions
  • Whether the rug needs a rug pad
  • The return policy before ordering a giant rug online

Because rolling an 8×10 rug back up and stuffing it into packaging sounds like exactly the kind of character-building experience I’d prefer to avoid.

Maybe Your Room Doesn’t Need More Stuff

That’s probably my biggest takeaway from working on our home.

When a room doesn’t feel finished, our first instinct is often:

Buy more stuff.

Another pillow.

Another basket.

Another vase.

Another piece of wall decor.

And then one day you look around and realize you didn’t solve the problem.

You just gave yourself more shit to dust.

Sometimes the room doesn’t need more.

It needs the right thing.

For a living room, that might be the rug that finally connects everything you’ve already chosen.

That’s what I’m looking for in ours.

Not perfection.

Not something a designer says we’re supposed to have.

Not a room created for Pinterest.

I want a living room where BigDog can sit down with his coffee, Luna can find her favorite spot, I can put my feet up, and the whole thing feels unmistakably like us.

Because that’s really what this Boho Dream House series has become about.

We’re not decorating a house to impress anybody.

We’re building a home that tells our story.

And sometimes one damn rug is all that’s missing.
