For a long time, I thought getting dressed was supposed to be about following the rules.

What is flattering?

What is age-appropriate?

What should a woman over 60 wear?

And, of course, if you’re plus size, there seems to be a whole other list of rules you’re expected to follow.

Well, I’m getting a little tired of rules.

These days, I want my clothes to be comfortable, affordable, and boho. And yes, I want to feel good in them, too.

I’m 68, and I’m rediscovering my personal style.

And honestly?

I’m having fun with it.

Plus Size Doesn’t Mean You Have to Hide

Let’s start with the words plus size.

For years, so much fashion for plus-size women seemed to be about hiding.

Hide your arms.

Hide your belly.

Wear black.

Don’t wear anything too busy.

Don’t wear anything too loose.

Don’t wear anything too fitted.

It can feel like there is a never-ending list of things we’re supposedly not allowed to wear.

I’m over it.

I don’t want to dress to make myself look smaller.

I want to dress in a way that makes me feel like me.

That’s a big difference.

I want clothes that move with me. Clothes that feel good when I’m sitting at my desk working on my blog, filming a YouTube video, heading out for coffee, or spending the day wandering around looking for something interesting to photograph.

I want to feel comfortable in my own skin—and comfortable in my clothes.

Gigi’s Plus-Size Comfort Pick

Looking for a comfortable plus-size basic that you can dress up or down? This is the kind of versatile piece I love having in my closet.

Comfortable Is Not the Same as Frumpy

Here’s something I’ve learned:

Comfortable doesn’t have to mean boring.

I love a soft, flowy top. I love a long kimono. I love wide-leg pants and maxi skirts. Give me a pair of comfortable sandals or boots, and I’m happy.

But I also want texture.

I want interesting jewelry.

I want a little fringe, a little embroidery, a beautiful pattern, or a great pair of earrings that makes me smile when I look in the mirror.

Comfort and style can absolutely live in the same closet.

I don’t think we have to choose between looking good and feeling comfortable.

We can have both.

My Comfortable Boho Closet Pick

This is the kind of comfortable boho piece that can become a wardrobe favorite. I love pieces that feel easy to wear but still have personality.

Affordable Boho Style Is Possible

One of the things I love about boho style is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to create the look.

In fact, I think boho works best when it doesn’t look too perfect.

Mix something you already own with something new.

Add a statement necklace.

Throw on a scarf.

Layer a vest or kimono over a simple outfit.

You can find beautiful pieces at thrift stores, consignment shops, vintage stores, flea markets, and affordable online retailers.

The trick isn’t buying more.

It’s learning how to put pieces together in a way that feels like you.

And that’s where I think age gives us an advantage.

We’ve had time to figure out what we actually like.

At least, that’s what I’m telling myself!

Affordable Boho Finds I Love

You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe to create a boho look. Sometimes one interesting piece is all it takes to completely change an outfit.

From Funeral to Boho: Rediscovering My Style

My journey into boho style didn’t happen overnight.

For seven years, I worked in a funeral home.

That experience became a big part of my life and, in many ways, shaped how I saw myself. I was surrounded by a very different kind of environment—one where clothing was often more traditional, conservative, and subdued.

Then something changed.

I realized I was ready for a change in my own life and in the way I expressed myself.

I wanted color.

I wanted texture.

I wanted jewelry that caught my eye.

I wanted to have fun with fashion again.

I wanted to feel a little more boho.

That’s where my journey from funeral to boho began.

It wasn’t just about changing clothes.

It was about changing how I saw myself.

I was rediscovering a part of me that had been waiting to come out.

And maybe that’s one of the reasons I’m enjoying this journey so much.

At 68, I’m realizing that we are never finished becoming who we’re meant to be.

Sometimes we outgrow our jobs.

Sometimes we outgrow our routines.

Sometimes we even outgrow the way we’ve been dressing for years.

And that’s okay.

You can close one chapter and open another.

For me, From Funeral to Boho is about more than fashion. It’s about giving yourself permission to evolve.

To experiment.

To have fun.

To find the things that make you feel alive again.

And maybe that’s what getting older is really about—not becoming less of yourself, but finally giving yourself the freedom to become more of who you are.

Watch My Journey From Funeral to Boho

This journey has become more than just a change in my wardrobe. It’s about rediscovering my personal style and remembering that I can still reinvent myself at 68.

I’ve shared more about that journey in my video, From Funeral to Boho.

My Boho Style Is Still Evolving

I’m not going to pretend I have it all figured out.

I’m still experimenting.

I’m learning the difference between boho and hippie style. I’m discovering new jewelry. I’m playing with layers and textures. I’m looking at my closet differently.

And I’m realizing that sometimes you don’t need a whole new wardrobe.

Sometimes you just need to look at what you already have with fresh eyes.

Maybe that dress you haven’t worn in three years needs a belt.

Maybe that plain black outfit needs a colorful necklace.

Maybe those jeans you’ve been wearing forever would look completely different with a flowing kimono and a pair of statement earrings.

That’s the fun part.

Style isn’t finished just because you turned 60.

Or 68.

Or 78.

A Few Pieces I’m Exploring for My Boho Style

These are the kinds of pieces I’m exploring as I continue to figure out what my personal boho style looks like.

Dress for the Life You’re Living Now

I think one of the biggest mistakes we can make as we get older is continuing to dress for the person we used to be—or the person we think we’re supposed to be.

I’m not 30 anymore.

I’m not trying to dress like I’m 30.

But I’m also not interested in dressing like I’ve disappeared.

I want my clothes to reflect the woman I am now.

A woman who has lived a little.

A woman who has changed.

A woman who has experienced loss and joy, raised a family, worked, retired, started over, learned new things, and decided that there is still plenty of life left to live.

That’s what my boho style represents to me.

It’s relaxed.

It’s creative.

It’s comfortable.

It’s a little unconventional.

And it’s mine.

My “Dress for You” Pick

The best style advice I can give? Find something that makes you feel good when you put it on. That’s always a good place to start.

You Don’t Need Permission to Change Your Style

Maybe you’ve spent years wearing the same kind of clothes because that’s what everyone expected from you.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to try boho but didn’t think you could pull it off.

Maybe you’re plus size and you’ve been told that certain styles aren’t “flattering.”

Maybe you’ve been shopping based on your age instead of your personality.

I’m here to tell you that you can change your mind.

You can change your style.

You can try something completely different.

You can decide that the clothes you wore five years ago don’t feel like you anymore.

And you don’t need anyone’s permission.

Start small.

Try a piece of statement jewelry.

Add a colorful scarf.

Find a comfortable, flowy top.

Try a maxi skirt.

Layer a kimono over jeans and a simple tank.

Or don’t.

The point isn’t to become someone else.

The point is to find your way back to yourself.

Start Small: My Boho Accessories

Sometimes you don’t need a whole new outfit. One accessory can completely change the feeling of something you already own.

My Plus Size, Comfortable, Affordable Boho Philosophy

If I had to sum up my style philosophy today, it would be pretty simple:

Wear what feels good.

Wear what makes you smile.

Wear what fits the life you’re living.

And don’t let a number decide what you are allowed to wear.

I’m embracing plus size, comfortable, affordable, and boho because those words describe what I’m looking for right now.

Not perfection.

Not trends.

Not rules.

Just clothes that feel good, look good, and let me show up as the woman I am today.

And maybe that’s the best part of getting older.

You finally realize you don’t have to dress for everybody else.

You get to dress for you.

And I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
