The Birds Know the Fence

Behind our house there’s a very large tree that seems to be the neighborhood bird meeting place. Doves, pigeons, finches, and occasionally even a hawk may stop by to visit. But sometimes the birds get a little too comfortable. Instead of sitting in the tree, they land right on our backyard fence. And that’s when the real excitement begins, because Luna sees everything.

The moment Luna spots birds sitting on the fence she goes into what we call pre-launch mode. Her little legs start spinning like she’s running in place while staring directly at the patio door. Back and forth. Back and forth.

Her eyes say it all: “Open the door, Gigi. We have a situation.”

Most days Luna is already wearing her small dog harness, because once the door open, she is ready to go straight into the backyard patrol.

The Door Opens

The second the patio door opens Luna rockets outside like a tiny black missile. She runs straight to the fence barking like she’s announcing to the entire bird population: “This yard is under professional supervision!” The birds scatter immediately, flying back to the big tree behind the house. I think she has done a back flip off the wall.

Luna then stands proudly at the fence, convinced she has successfully defended the property as the backyard security officer

Luna takes her role as Backyard Security Officer very seriously. Every bird that lands on that fence gets investigated. Except one group.

The hummingbirds. They hover around the hummingbird feeder on our patio and Luna simply sits quietly watching them like tiny flying jewels. No barking, just observation. Apparently, hummingbirds have been granted VIP clearance.

If you enjoy watching hummingbirds as much as we do, having a good hummingbird nectar feeder makes it easy to bring them into your backyard.

Post-Incident Recovery

After the fence line has been secured, Luna usually returns to the patio where she supervises the garden while I water the tomatoes and basil growing in our raised patio garden planters.

She takes garden inspection duties almost as seriously as bird patrol. Mostly she just sniffs everything and makes sure the tomatoes are behaving properly.

Life With Luna

Dogs have funny little routines that become part of daily life, and Luna’s Fence Line Incident Patrol has become one of ours. Every time birds land on that fence I know exactly what’s about to happen. The wheels start spinning. The patio door opens. And Luna handles the situation.

I hope you enjoyed this page of Luna’s life, I know I have enjoyed this pup since she came into our life. So, I hope you look forward to the next chapter of ā€œLuna Chroniclesā€.
