Luna Has Big Paws to Fill

The first time we head out this season on the road it will Luna’s first road trip. And let’s just say she has big paws to fill. Last year, we said goodbye to our beloved Jet. She was our road trip companion, our steady campground shadow, the one who knew the sound of the RV hitch clicking into place. She had traveled miles with us lakes, mountains, quiet campgrounds where the coffee tasted better simply because we were parked somewhere new.

Jet wasn’t just along for the ride. She was part of the ride. So, this next trip carries a little weight. A little memory. A little ache. But it also carries something else. Hope.
Jet was calm. Loyal. The kind of dog who settled into campground life like she’d been doing it forever. She knew the routine. She knew the smells. She knew that when the engine started, an adventure was waiting.
There’s something sacred about those memories. But here’s what I’ve learned at 67 loves doesn’t get replaced. It gets carried forward. We’re not taking Luna to “replace” Jet. We’re taking Luna because life keeps moving. And so do we.

I have to say our Luna is different from our Jet. She’s curious. A lot more energetic. A little more “what’s that?!” about everything. Where Jet was steady, Luna is spirited. And that’s okay.
This will be her first time feeling the RV move beneath her. Her first time watching the world pass by through that little window. Her first time stepping out onto unfamiliar ground and sniffing like she just discovered treasure.
And if I’m honest… it will be our first time learning campground life without Jet quietly by our side. That’s a strange sentence to write.
But it’s true. Because this is her first trip, we’re being especially thoughtful.
She’ll have:
- Her own bed — the one she sleeps on at home
- Familiar blankets that smell like us
- A secure travel setup while driving
- A full travel kit with food, bowls, leash, treats, and all the practical things
But beyond the checklist, we’re preparing emotionally too.
We know this trip may stir up memories. When we pull into a campground, I might instinctively look for Jet’s old resting spot. When I hear the gravel under our tires, I might remember how she used to lift her head. Grief doesn’t disappear just because time passes. But neither does gratitude. And there is deep gratitude for the years we had with her.
Luna has big paws to fill.
But here’s the thing she doesn’t need to fill them the same way. She doesn’t need to be calm like Jet. She doesn’t need to sit in the exact same spot. She doesn’t need to move the way Jet moved. She just needs to be Luna.
That realization feels bigger than RV travel. It feels like life After loss, we sometimes expect the next chapter to look like the last one. But it never does. It has its own rhythm. Its own personality. Its own lessons. Luna’s road trip story won’t be Jet’s story. It will be hers. And we get to be part of it.
Some people might say it would be easier to leave her with someone. Less planning. Less responsibility. But that’s never been how we’ve lived. Dogs in our house are family. Jet went everywhere with us that she could. And now Luna will too.
Because this season of life at 67 isn’t about convenience. It’s about connection.
It’s about waking up in a campground and watching your dog stretch in the morning light. It’s about slower walks. About sitting outside the RV at sunset with BigDog and feeling grateful that we can still hitch up and go. It’s about togetherness. And Luna belongs in that picture.
The first time we turn the key and start that engine with Luna in the back. I know I’ll feel a mix of sadness for what was. Gratitude for what we had and excitement for what’s ahead.
That’s what life is at this age. Not either/or. But both. Jet will always be part of our road trip history. But Luna? She’s part of our road trip future. And yes, she has big paws to fill. But I have a feeling she’s going to leave her own prints all over this next chapter.
