A Green Thumb?

I started gardening because I wanted fresh food. That’s it. Not a hobby, not a new identity just food that came from my own backyard. I wanted the ability to go out to my backyard and pull out the vegetables I needed to make pico de gallo. Which I just love.

I am fairly new at this, but I went into it with the attitude of let’s see what survives with me. Some things are doing okay. Tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, cilantro. And then there was squash. Oh my, poor thing. One day it looked great. The next day it didn’t. And that was that.

I know my tomatoes look bad, but this little one has given me 6 tomatoes. Basil and bell peppers are pretty new. But still growing.

What surprised me most was how fast things change. You can walk outside feeling pretty good about yourself and come back in wondering what happened? But instead of letting that stop me, it made me realize something. This is what trying new things looks like.

Not everything works. Some things won’t make it. But you still learn. You still show up the next day. And sometimes, what survives is enough to keep you going.

This little garden isn’t about doing it right. It’s about trying. And if you’ve been putting something off because you’re afraid you’ll mess it up, take it from me you might. And that’s okay, because I now I have. But you got to get up and continue moving forward.
