Father’s Day looks different now.
We lost my dad in mid-2024, and that first round of holidays without him was every bit as hard as you’d imagine. I never expected memorial jewelry for Father’s Day to be part of how I cope — but a ring I wear every single day, engraved with my dad’s actual fingerprint, has helped me more than I can say.
My mom had the rings made for her daughters — each one carrying Dad’s fingerprint, the one-of-a-kind mark only he could leave behind. When I look down at my hand, he’s there. In the studio, at the grocery store, on the hard days and the good ones. It sounds simple, but it changes something. Grief gets a little quieter when you can literally hold on to him.

What Is Memorial Jewelry?
Memorial jewelry (sometimes called remembrance or keepsake jewelry) is any piece designed to honor someone you’ve lost. Some popular types include:
- Fingerprint jewelry — rings, pendants, or bracelets engraved with your loved one’s actual fingerprint, often taken from funeral home records or ink prints (this is what I wear — it’s the most personal thing I’ve ever owned)
- Handwriting jewelry — a signature or “Love, Dad” from an old card engraved onto a bar necklace or cuff
- Cremation jewelry — pendants and rings with a small chamber that holds ashes
- Photo engraving — a favorite picture laser-etched onto a pendant
- Birthstone or date pieces — his birthstone, or important dates stamped into metal
Why Fingerprint Jewelry Means So Much
A fingerprint is the most personal thing a person leaves behind. No two are alike — it’s him, in a way a name or date can never quite be. For Father’s Day especially, a fingerprint piece feels like holding his hand one more time.
If your dad has passed recently, ask the funeral home — many keep fingerprint records and can release them to family. If you have an item he touched often, some artisans can even work from a lifted print, though results vary.
Ideas for Honoring Dad This Father’s Day
The piece itself matters — but so does how you choose to use it. Here are a few ways to make the day feel intentional rather than just something to get through.
- Wear his piece somewhere meaningful. I’ll be wearing my ring to his favorite breakfast spot.
- Gift a piece to a sibling or your mom. My mom’s gift to us daughters became something we all share — a quiet sisterhood of rings.
- Pair it with a memory. Write down a favorite story about him and tuck it in the jewelry box.
- Start a tradition. Each Father’s Day, add a small charm, or simply take a photo of the ring somewhere he loved.

A Gentle Word If You’re Grieving
If this is your first Father’s Day without your dad — or your second, like mine — be gentle with yourself. There’s no right way to spend the day. Memorial jewelry isn’t about “moving on.” It’s about carrying him forward. If you’re curious about the everyday pieces I wear alongside my memorial ring, I shared more in The Rings, Bracelets, and Necklaces I Actually Wear.
I twist my ring when I miss him. His fingerprint presses against mine. And somehow, that’s enough to get me through.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I’m still holding your hand.
