The Comfortable Travel Outfit Formula I’m Actually Wearing at 68

There was a time when I thought a travel outfit needed to look like a travel outfit.

You know the one.

Comfortable pants.

Sneakers.

Some sort of oversized top.

And basically an agreement with yourself that you’ll worry about looking cute again when you get where you’re going.

Nope.

At 68, I have different requirements.

I want to be comfortable.

I want layers because apparently every airplane, restaurant and car has its own damn climate.

I need shoes I can actually walk in.

I want a bag that doesn’t make me crazy.

And when I catch myself in the bathroom mirror somewhere along the way, I still want to look like me.

So I’ve been working on a travel outfit formula.

Not one specific outfit.

A formula.

Because if we’re going to travel, I don’t want to reinvent my wardrobe every time I pack a suitcase.

THE GIGI TRAVEL FORMULA

COMFORT + LAYERS + PERSONALITY

Easy base + good layer + comfortable shoes + crossbody + sunglasses + jewelry

That’s it.

Six pieces.

Change the colors, fabrics and accessories and you’ve got another outfit without starting over.

And this is where some of the brands I’ve been working with actually make sense together.

Not because I need to cram four affiliate programs into one post.

Because this is how I really build an outfit.

1. Start With a Base You Can Sit In

This is non-negotiable.

If I’m going to be sitting in a car or airplane for hours, I don’t care how cute the pants look standing in front of the mirror.

Can I sit in them?

That’s the test.

Give me soft pull-on pants, comfortable jeans with some stretch or a relaxed wide-leg pant.

Then I want an easy top.

Nothing that needs constant adjusting.

Nothing digging into me.

Nothing I’m going to spend six hours tugging back into place.

And no outfit that requires shapewear just to survive the airport.

We’re traveling, baby.

Not competing for Miss TSA 2026.

THE COMFORTABLE BASE

This is where I’d use Amazon for the less-expensive basics:

  • comfortable travel pants
  • layering tee or tank
  • compression socks if you use them
  • travel-friendly underlayers
  • comfortable sneakers

And because we’ll probably have more than five Amazon products by the time we finish this post, I would make this another Amazon Storefront Ideas List rather than cluttering the article with a dozen individual links.

2. Then Add the Layer That Makes the Outfit

This is where Zeagoo comes in.

And this is also where our coat work from the other blog starts paying us back.

I don’t want a travel jacket that only works while I’m traveling.

If it’s taking up room in my suitcase, it needs another job.

Wear it on the plane.

Wear it to dinner.

Wear it sightseeing.

Wear it with jeans.

Wear it with black pants.

Throw it over something nicer.

Make the damn thing work.

For this formula, I especially like the idea of an easy neutral or earthy Zeagoo layer.

The Gray Cozy Layer

The Zeagoo Winter Fashion Polar Fleece Hooded Coat — $56.99 gives us that relaxed travel feel.

It’s cozy without requiring the entire outfit underneath to be casual.

Jeans? Yes.

Black pants? Yes.

Sneakers? Yes.

Boots later? Yes.

That’s exactly what I want.

PLACARD

DON’T PACK A ONE-JOB JACKET

If it only works with one travel outfit, it doesn’t make the suitcase.

🥼SHOP THE GRAY ZEAGOO COZY LAYER

And if gray isn’t your thing, this is where I would link the Easy Boho Layers for Fall collection we’ve been building on the Gigi’s Unfiltered Awin Storefront rather than dumping four more coat links into this article.

3. Sunglasses Are Not an Afterthought

Okay.

Now we start making the comfortable outfit look intentional.

This is exactly why I liked the DIMA cat-eye sunglasses.

The pair we’ve been looking at — Sammi in Milky Light Olive with the Olive Lens — gives an otherwise simple travel outfit personality without adding another layer of clothing.

That’s my kind of accessory.

Throw your hair together.

Put on the glasses.

Add earrings.

Suddenly you’ve gone from:

I’ve been sitting in this car for three hours

to:

Yes, this is apparently my travel look.

The olive also works beautifully with gray, denim, cream, rust, camel and other earthy colors I already gravitate toward.

And that’s another rule I use when I’m choosing travel accessories:

They need to work with more than one outfit.

ONE PAIR. MULTIPLE OUTFITS.

4. Jewelry Is Where I Put the Boho Back In

Here’s something I’ve realized while we’ve been building these fall outfits.

The clothing itself doesn’t always need to scream boho.

Sometimes I’d rather have a great basic layer and let my accessories tell the story.

That’s exactly where HeyHappiness comes in.

Give me:

  • statement earrings
  • layered necklaces
  • a bracelet stack
  • mixed metals
  • something with texture or movement

Now my gray jacket doesn’t look like everybody else’s gray jacket.

It looks like mine.

And that’s really what personal style is.

Not buying an entire aesthetic.

Taking pieces and making them look like you.

THE CLOTHES CAN BE SIMPLE.

Let the jewelry bring the personality.

5. The Bag Has to Pass the Hands-Free Test

Travel is not the time for a bag that needs babysitting.

I want crossbody.

Period.

My hands need to be available for:

Suitcase.

Phone.

Coffee.

Boarding pass.

Luna—depending on the situation.

BigDog’s stuff that somehow ended up in my hands.

A medium crossbody gives me enough room for the things I actually need without becoming another piece of luggage.

This is another good Amazon placement because we don’t need a $200 handbag to make the outfit work.

HANDS FREE OR IT STAYS HOME.

Phone. Wallet. Glasses. Lip stuff. Travel essentials.

Done.

6. Comfortable Shoes Aren’t Negotiable Anymore

At 68, I have officially retired from footwear that hurts for no damn reason.

Cute?

Yes.

Personality?

Absolutely.

But if I can’t walk through an airport, stand around waiting, get in and out of a car and make it through lunch without thinking about my feet…

They’re not travel shoes.

And that doesn’t automatically mean orthopedic-looking sneakers.

There are too many good options now.

For travel day, I’d probably choose a comfortable sneaker or easy slip-on.

Then pack the boots for the outfit change later.

That’s another way I keep the suitcase under control.

Wear the bulkiest practical layer. Pack the smaller pieces.

HERE’S THE WHOLE OUTFIT

GIGI’S TRAVEL UNIFORM AT 68

BASE: Comfortable pants + easy top
LAYER: Zeagoo coat or jacket
SHOES: Walkable sneaker
BAG: Crossbody
SUNGLASSES: DIMA cat-eye
JEWELRY: HeyHappiness
ATTITUDE: We’re going somewhere, baby.

And the beauty of this formula is that when I arrive, I don’t necessarily need to change everything.

Swap the sneakers for boots.

Change the tee for a blouse.

Add bigger earrings.

Keep the jacket.

Keep the sunglasses.

Keep the bag.

And now I’m ready for dinner.

That’s exactly how I want my travel wardrobe to work.

What I’m NOT Packing Anymore

I’m getting much less interested in packing for imaginary versions of myself.

You know her.

She apparently changes clothes four times a day on vacation.

Needs three handbags.

Has six pairs of shoes.

And evidently attends a surprise cocktail party every evening.

Meanwhile, actual Gigi wants to be comfortable, look cute, see things, eat something good and enjoy herself.

So I’m not packing:

“Just in case” clothes I never wear.

I’m not bringing shoes that already hurt at home.

I’m not packing five jackets.

And I’m definitely not bringing anything that requires a complicated undergarment situation.

We’re keeping it moving.

Travel Style After 60 Should Still Look Like You

This is the part I care about most.

Comfortable doesn’t have to mean invisible.

And getting older doesn’t mean our travel uniform needs to become beige elastic-waist pants and whatever shirt happened to be clean.

Unless that’s your thing.

Then rock the hell out of it.

But it’s not mine.

I still like turquoise.

I still like funky glasses.

I still like jewelry.

I still like denim.

I still like a little 70s hippie mixed with boho and whatever else catches my eye.

So that’s what I’m taking with me.

Because I’m not trying to look younger when I travel.

I’m trying to look like Gigi at 68, going somewhere.

That’s a completely different goal.

I haven’t packed the suitcase yet.

But I know what I want going into it.

Pieces that work together.

Things I can actually sit and walk in.

Layers that earn the space they take up.

Accessories that make the basics feel like me.

And absolutely nothing that makes me miserable before I’ve even reached the destination.

Because at 68, I’ve finally figured something out:

I don’t need to suffer to prove I got dressed.

Comfort and style are allowed to sit next to each other.

Preferably in the good seats.

Tits up and be fierce. We’ve got places to go.
