Since I retired, I had been thinking about getting a pup. BigDog wasn’t really excited about a pup, but I knew that I wanted one. I also knew it was going to be a rescue dog, just like our Jet.
Little did I know how much this small dog would change me.
She’s tiny. Quiet when she wants to be. Acts tough… until she’s not. But somewhere along the way…
Luna changed my days. Not in a big, dramatic way. In the small, quiet moments.
Mornings Look Different Now
Before Luna, mornings were… just mornings. Coffee. Checking calendar/planner for appointments for the day. Thinking about what needed to get done.
Now?
I open the door… and she’s already moving. Nose to the ground. Ears up. Checking everything like she’s on duty.
And instead of rushing…I pause.
I Didn’t Expect to Slow Down
That’s probably the biggest change. I slow down now. Not because I must. Because I want to. I stand outside longer. Watch her move around the yard. Notice things I used to walk right past.
And somehow…
That feels better than anything on my to-do list.
Tiny Dog… Big Presence
She’s small. But she has this way of being… present. No rushing. No overthinking. No worrying about what’s next. Just right now. And I didn’t realize how much I needed that.
She Didn’t Know It… But She Changed Something
There’s something about having her nearby. On the patio. In the garden. Curled up when the day slows down. It makes everything feel a little softer. A little more grounded.
A Few Things That Made Life Easier With Luna

I didn’t realize how much the right things mattered until we found what worked:
We started using a lick mat like this one during meals, and it completely slowed her down and kept her focused longer
Finding a small dog harness that fits her comfortably made walks so much easier (no pulling, no slipping out)
She always goes back to her favorite soft blanket/bed — it’s her little safe spot, especially when she’s cold
And a couple of simple enrichment toys like these keep her busy while I’m having my morning coffee
Nothing fancy.
Just things that made our everyday routine feel smoother.
The Routine I Didn’t Plan
Morning coffee outside
Luna doing her rounds
Checking on the garden
Letting the day start slow
I didn’t plan this routine.
She created it.
What I’ve Learned
Life doesn’t always change in big ways. Sometimes it’s:
A small dog.
A quiet morning.
A slower pace.
And suddenly…
Your whole day feels different.
Closing
She acts tough. She’s always a little cold. And somehow, she runs the whole day. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
